Engine swap

I have a 85 El Camino with a 4.3 V6 that has alot of miles on it and a blown head gasket. The miles are approaching 200K so I don't think I can get away with just a head gasket. I also have a 78 305 and th350 combo that is relatively fresh. Can the 305 be swapped for the 4.3 and keep the computer controls, (I'll need a new CPU), along with the fuel injection? (Fuel injection is a throttle body). What an I overlooking? What else would need to be changed. Is this more trouble than it's worth.
Thanks for any and all info.
Vince

Since it's a TBI I don't think you'll need another wiring harness. May be able to use every thing from the V6 except CPU. Doesn't sound like a complicated swap.

Is the V6 a TBI? If it is, a TBI V8 will swap in. The sensors and controls would be same/similar. You can either replace the entire computer with one from the V8 or put a custom chip into the existing computer.

At 200 kilo miles I'd be concered that the transmission, if an automatic, will not be happy with a frisky young engine suddenly bolted to it.

"new"engine has "new" tranny with it! That's what makes the whole thing so attractive. I just wanted some feed back on the electronic side of this.
Thanks for all of the replies.

The TBI motors all use pretty much the same computer. It's the PROM that gets changed.

whats on the 305 for heads ? I'm thinking TBI heads are different than 78 305 heads. but I could be 100% wrong. but isn't there a knock sensor on the 85 block ? on my 87 TBI swap it had a knock sensor.

good luck

1986 was the change to the center bolt valve covers and weird intake bolts.I would think(not knowing much about TBI etc...)that a TBI intake off a pre-86 350/305 would work?
I dunno about the knock sensor but don't it just go in the side hole of the head?
Do you need to pass emmisions??If not I can show you many ways off taking a die grinder to the CPU wiring harness and sticking a carb on it. lol

I'm thinking the knock sensor is in the block, but your prob right this 1st tbi engine might not have a knock sensor, or maybe a knock sensor can go in frost plug hole ? my tbi engine swap was a 350 in a 87 suburban and it had center bolt v covers ect.

78 305 heads will have a tight chamber, 53-58 cc is what you'll typically see, with 1.84 intake and 1.5 exhaust valves.

305 engines with TBI are pretty much the same but the center 4 (2 on each side) intake manifold bolts are changed from 90 degrees to the machined surface of the older heads to 70 degrees which makes crossing the intakes between these heads impossible without doing work to modify the bolt holes in the manifold so the proper angles for the head's bolts are addressed.

The knock sensor typically mounts into what had been the water jacket drain on the passenger side of the block.
