engine swap
I have a Pontiac 326, 389 tri power and a speical built 513 from jim butler perforamce. The 389 is in a 62 Pontiac safari Waygon and is running good. The 326 is in nothing and all I would have to do is a head job. I have 2 671 heads to rework. My plans were to take the 389 out of the waygon and drop the big block in it. However the 292 engine in my Edsel needs to be replaced. I am thinking about trying to have a valve job done on the 671 heads and install it in the Edsel with tri power and a tubo 400. Has any one every done this and could give me some advice. I know the motor mount and a new transmission mount will have to be made. I have an Edsel parts car and thought I would remove front cap and take a trial run on putting the 326 in the parts car. Then I would have all the mounts fabricated and ready for the engine and trans swap. I think that after I put the BB in the waygon I might have the 389 bored 60 over then put it in the edsel.
I know that I am taking on a big job but I am retired and have the time. All comments and help will greatly appriciated. In my eariler years I was to busy with a work caree and money was a little short then, now I have the time and garage and the money part might be ok. Both kids are grown and on their own. |

all ford
A Fe 390 427-428 will bolt in with factory mounts. I can't remember for sure which way to turn the mounts,, I did the Y block to Fe, use the same motor mounts either switched left to right or turned them around BUT no new mounts required. and I think a 460 will bolt in with the correct factory mounts.

As much as I like the Pontiac, keep the Ford "all Ford". As said, the FE engine is an excellent replacement for the old Y-block, and still relatively cheap and available.
While it may have a large displacement (513 CID), it's still just a "Pontiac". There are no "big block" or "small block" Pontiacs. There are "large" and "small journal" Pontiacs, but it's kind of a misnomer, as the mains in the "small" Pontiac are bigger than those in both BBC and Hemi. Those of us "in the Pontiac world" disregard the 265/301, as it has no real potential and is rather weak. The early 389 block is best "saved" for early restorations. Nothing "special" about a '62 389, except it won't "fit" directly to a TH400. It has larger bolts (7/16"), though the pattern is the same as the later ones. The "kicker" is the starter is bolted to the transmission (like a Ford) and not the block, like the later years. It can be an "adventure" to get it all to work in concert. Save that 513 for something in the 3,000 lb. range, so you can make "believers" out of the "crater crowd" and their 572 Chevys...(:- FWIW Jim |

That is the decision I have almost made, but gearheadslife has come up with rebuilding the 292. Here's my thought on that is that rebuilding the 292 l3aves me with the open crankcase breaher/vent pipe. I don't know if I could install a PCV system on the 292 or knot, I think it would be simple. The Edsel is my crusing car and I am not trying to get 300 or 400 hp in it. I just want to drive it without a lot of smoke trailing behind me. The old 292 runs great, but when stlppod at a light somke comes from under the car so bad I could smog for bugs. AS dar as the pontiac engines go I was going to usr the stock 326. The 513 CI has been bores 60 over, blanced, stroked, with special racing heads, balanced, and blueprinted. I not going to say how much I have in this engine. I think the HP is somewhere 400-550 hp. This engine is destin for th 62 waygon. I found where I can get a good used 390 FE for around $900.00 with a 3 yr warrenty on parts and labor which sounds pretty good to me. Thanks to eveyone for their comments. |

I don't know what the HPof Torque is since it asn't dynoed yet, but it shoud be high with all the things that have been done to it besides roller cam an rockers. I am really a Pontiac man but the wife the Edsel. This engine is destin for th 62 waygon. OK, I guess after 4 duplicate posts we get the point! Yikes!
I'd sell the 326 Pontiac to a person who needs one, and use the funds to buy a decent Ford big block to put in the Edsel! |
