Engine Swap: 5.7 LT1 into 1990 Caprice Classic

I'm looking at possibly swapping a 5.7L LT1 engine from a 1991 police package Caprice Classic into my 1990 Caprice Classic (original 5.0L fuel injected V8). I'm looking for any thoughts, hints, or criticism from anyone. Any and all input is appreciated, but please try to be helpful!

That sounds like a good idea to me. Just make sure you do anything you want to do to the motor before you drop it in the car; it'll be much easier that way.

This should be a bolt-in. The 91-96 B-body cars use the same frame as the 1977-1990 cars. Just get the frame mounts, harness, sensors, ECU, etc from the donor car.

The only problem I see is that there is no such thing as a 1991 model car with an LT1. I certainly hope the engine was swapped and actually is an LT1.

A 1991 cop motor would NOT be an LT1, at least not originally. The LT1 was not put into cop cars till 1994, even then most got the L99 which from the outside looks like an LT1 but is only 263 cubes which is a 305 bore with a 283/302 stroke.

Most 1991 Caprice cop cars came with a port injected 305 rated at 170 hp. A minority were equipped with the LO5 TBI injected 350 rated at 195 hp.
Rarely you might find one with the iron headed version of the L98 with TBI, but these are pretty unusual. The L98 engine is just an LO5 with different heads and injection, no big shakes down below. Either 350 may be a 2 or 4 bolt block, you can't tell unless the pan is off, nothing indicates which from the outside.

You need to look carefully before buying, check out the block casting numbers to determine whether you're looking at a 305 or a 350.

305's:
14088551, 14093627, 14094766

350's:
14079287, 14088548, 14093638, 14101148

Also, you can check the RPO-Code sticker inside the trunk lid of that 91.

L03 = 305 TBI
L05 = 350 TBI
