Post engine timing

I run a 350 chev that came in my 57 chev when i bought it. I was told it had a 30 overbore and was a four bolt main. It has 202 f.i cast iron heads and a 30/30 duntov mech cam . when ever i get an engine that is unknown to me i have learned to do a few things. 1) i drop the pan and check #1 bearings. This is when i found out it was a 2 bolt main. I install a new oil pump.( i prefer high volume over psi)2) i pull the timing chain an put in a dbl roller. On this motor i installed roller rocker added a 7101 open plenum chamber eldbrock manifoild. ( which is really a top end manifoild and is wrong for my application. But it was layin their) I put a new 600 cfm eldbrock carb on. I rebuild an HEI dist. added the hooker headers. The engine has good compression at 170 lbs. My problem is that it rattles and pings going up hills.
I have used a light to time it. =no joy
i have used a vaccum guage to time it =no joy
I have timed it by ear=no joy
I added light weight springs to the dist=no joy
I installed a programable vaccumn advance unit= no joy. I even blocked the truck set the parking brake had my buddie pore on the throttle to see if i could get it to ping and rattle thinking i would set it that way=no joy. I don`t know but i might have pop up pistons in it, and this is a compression problem. The only time it runs well on hills is with hight test gas and octane booster. and even then it has a slight rattle. Now i know the manifold is wrong for the carb, but would it cause it to rattle? is it just not getting enough gas on the hills? So what do ya`ll think? Please advise!!!This is much more engine than i need or want in the truck. Oh yeah on the flats it screams!!!

Try colder plugs they help by lowering the temp. in the combustion chamber. Learn how to read them at http://www.centuryperformance.com/spark.htm
You should have put stronger springs in the distributor so it wont advance so quick. Probably
should have your initial timing at about 6 degrees before TDC. Good luck.

hey slider bud, have you tried retardin it just a wee tad and see if that does anything? id don't know crap about advancing mechanisms of any kind of distributor-my uni-lite just does it's own thing. i'm thinking maybe your stuck using premium. but no way should you have to ad octane booster too unless you really do have pop-ups. (none of your buds called me back yet.)

Yes i have retared the timing step by step. With it not getting any better. I beleive that all timing should be by 33 to 35k and it is. as for the springs i used lighter dist springs think it would make it advance quicker. Maybe i should put the stock one back in and see if that helps!!! Good thing to look at . Thanks !
