engine tranny combo

Hello all, What would be a good engine/tranny/rear end combo for a 51 1/2 ton chevy truck. It still has the straight axle and closed drive. I plan on using it as a daily driver. I am considering a 350 crate engine, but am not sure of the transmission. I am not really sure of the differences.
Thanks

The 350 crate engine is good due to its avaliability and cost. A bigger cubed engine will pull ya around easier though.
As far as Trannys go. Id use a well built Turbo 400. Takes a little power to run it, but its tuff. HG

I would NEVER go with a 350 Chevy under any circumstances. There are just too many out there and I like to be different. But that's me. If you want a create 350 it's your truck so go for it.

Unless you're going racing there's no need for a TH-400. For an everyday driver a TH-350 is more than enough. If you're going to do a lot of driving on the interstate you might want to think about an overdrive trans like a 700R.

Good luck.

My brother has a 79 chevy malibu with a 350 that has some modifications and he went through 2 turbo 350's. Now he has a turbo 400 and it's really durable. I know your just going crate but I suggest getting the 400 for the long haul. As far as the gears go. I have a 60 ford 1/2 truck with 370 gears and a 351 engine. My suggestion is go with 370 gears. Good for street and has some stop and go in case some one is getting froggy.
