engine trouble , runs rough

Hi I have a 69 z28 camaro, but the engine is a later model 350. The engine ran fine before with not smoking or rough idle... but had a large cam. I put in a smaller one to help with gas mileage. The timing is right, but the engine runs rough and will backfire through the carb at about 1/2 to full throttle. The vacuum gauge is fluctuating rapidly from 12 to 16 and smoothes out to 18 when the engine revs up to about 2500 rpms. The plugs are clean and the wires are all good. Could this be a vacuum leak or intake leak. and if so how can i tell.

running rough

To check to see if your intake is leaking, get a can of carb cleaner and spray it around the intake flanges to see if it is leaking, if it is you will notice a change in the idle. As far as backfiring, double check your firing order if your timing is right. Hope this helps,, Perry.

Doc here,

Check your Valve lash..Sounds like you have one or more too tight.

Happy and Safe Labor Day!
