ok i have a chevy 350 freshly rebuilt, hei distirbutor w/ vac advance, .o35 gap in plugs, edelbrock 1405, oem fuel pump....
well anyways went to start it up for the first time today, and at first it cranked alittle bit, then it caught alittle then it kinda poofed through the car followed by a fireball, did that scenarios a couple of times, while adjusting the distributor different ways, finally i thought maybe i'm a 180 off, pulled distributor rotated and reset it, then it just backfired through the carb.... any ideas?????

Start from the beginning.

Pull #1 plug, put your finger in the hole and have someone bump the starter. When your finger blows out, STOP and manually rotate the crank until the timing mark lines up close to 12 degrees.
Remove the dist cap and see where the rotor is pointing. If it's not at #1 wire, reposition the dist. If it's ok, ck the valve adjustment. Too tight and it will backfire and not run.

Ha! I did that once myself, those race header's on that BBC 481CID 981HP drag boat engine were throwing flames out right by my shoulders.
