Epoxy Primer, Urethane Primer Compatibility

Hey guys, new here, Im from New Zealand and into Jap cars but really admire hot rods also. I have noticed alot of people on this forum have good knowledge in regard to paint technologies and correct procedures. I have got into panel beating and painting as a hobby and Im respraying my Dads truck at the moment after doing my own and friends vehicles.

I want to use an epoxy primer over the bare steel areas then use a 2k filler primer on top of this for block sanding as I have found 1k etch primers are prone to stone chipping.

After looking at some posts on here and data sheets it has become obvious that epoxy primers don’t really fully cure for up to a week from application, however 2k primers can be put over in as little as two hours after the last epoxy coat is put down. From what I have managed to find it doesn’t really seem to be a no no to use a different brand of 2k primer over the epoxy even if its not fully cured.

It just seems to me that if you have got two different types of chemical reactions going on (one uses Isocyanates and the other resins) that there could be potential for trouble if different brands are used. Ive already got 4 Litres of 2k primer that’s been used on other projects and want to use it but just want to check I can use another brand epoxy primer underneath.

Everyone seems to do it but it just seems dodgy??

I stopped using etch primers almost 20 yrs ago in favor of the epoxies...I've always let the epoxy fully cure,then sand and bondo,re epoxy, sand and then urathane. I always let everything cure before moving on to the next step..but to answear your question, any epoxy will work with any 2k combination ...We all have our brand preferences but as long as its cured you shouldnt have any trouble at all...

Thanks for the reply, Ive always done my body work on bare metal then feathered it into the existing paint sanded with 80 grit (assuming its a urethane in good condition still). Ive been reading with interest about using epoxy underneath for better adhesion and rust prevention.

I was hoping to use the 2k urethane primmer "wet" over the epoxy primer as I have no need to wait as my body works all done. Most data sheets say they can be top coated wet on wet from 1-24hours after application but don’t specify if the urethane primmer has to be from the same product range.

I dont use epoxy on repair work just the urethane works fine. I use the epoxy on everything I strip to metal...The products and brands you use over there are different so whatever the tech sheet says would be the way to go.I can mix and match different brands because I know them but I cant really tell you anything about what your using and guarantee the results

Thanks, im probably going to get some Valspar VP50 epxoy primer and some Valspar HS35 2k filler primer to go over it so I know there wont be an issue, the data sheet says the epoxy can be topcoated after 2 hours so im guessing the filler primer is the same, I have emailed them to confirm.

Anyone got anything good or bad to say about the Valspar producs ive mentioned?

I have found all Valspar products to be top notch. They are the parent company of House Of Kolor (HOK)

My horse trailer was painted with Valspar

never liked it much so i re-did it

What didnt you like about it?, what type of paint was it? urethane, enamel ?

Im only going to be using the two Valspar primers then a Lechler 2k topcoat ive found to be good.
