Just price the difference between a new STEEL 32 ford kit VS a GLASS 32 ford kit...

Look.ing back to the OP, I don't really think that the era of fiberglass is coming to an end. Quite the contrary, I think the "kitcar" era is about to start or take off. It is so much easier to start with a kit. A good share of the part are available from a single source and they more or less fit without too much rework. SB excepted. lessons learned on that one. Probably the hardest part is to start with a large enough bankroll. None of glass cars are cheap so you have to have a projected cost that is realistic and the means to get there or the project will stall.

Our hot rod "kits" are not really licted in the popular kit car mag but I think the mfg have just missed this and are just getting started on more complete builder kits.

Also I think the newer younger guys need to think building a car through better. It is a monumental task the first time and if you go down the wrong path things can get sour quickly.

This board surely can help out if the question gets asked. There some very good build threads here too.

I just happened to run into this kitcar mfg. they have been around for a while and make a very complete kit.

Regal Roadsters LTD

Assuming you can do all the assembly and fab work yourself this is a pretty nice piece.

You still have to get the running gear and motor/trans, but most of the related stuff is supplied.

Not the cheapest car in the world but it sure would make a neat streetrod.

He says 4 months to build it but that's if you have all the parts at hand and enough cash to get what you need.

Maybe not in the spirit of the original post, but Factory Five is bringing out a Subaru WRX based kit which addresses some of the issues brought up in this thread. It uses all WRX running gear and donor parts on a steel frame chassis and fiberglass body. Thier target is a $10K sale price for the kit so it is quite conciveable you could build it for an additional $5k with a good shopping and selling off of unused donor parts. Even though the market for their cobra and hot rod kits are still strong, they see the need for an entry level kit for younger buyers and the Subaru platform is very poular with them already. One of the objectives is a high quality gel coat fiberglass which is presentable as is without additional paint or bodywork to keep cost down.

Please don't take this as an advertisement, just sharing info.

then there are the rat rods.

In this part of the country the younger guys are into building what they call traditional hot rods , like you see in 40's and 50's pictures, there is still quite a bit of usable old metal around and cheap. The engine just has to run and not smoke too much. I seem to just be gathering parts, My grand son wants to build one. Model A frame, 40 front suspension, 8.8 rear, 'model A pickup box, 27 roadster cowl, no doors or seat back yet, $ 500 donor chevy pickup will net $200 for scrap pieces. $ 800 spent so far.

Factory Five does some pretty neat things and that car is a great idea, hope they make too much money selling them.

There are still a tone of cars out there at a reasonable cost, certainly a lot less than one of those high dollar "custom" 37 bodies!

Yeah !!!! 2000 miles away from some people,, And only good for rat rods... and most don't even have titles with them..

I have been thru 29 of these beautiful United States of America, on five and six thousand mile road trips. I have seen cool old cars in yards, fields, shops, behind gas stations, I have seen them in every single one of these 29 states, and that includes Hawaii. "Rat Rods" are made because the person choses to make one, out of that same body one could make a cut and buffed show car, it is their choice to make which ever he wants or nice driver, it's his choice. I have no idea how hard titles are to get anywhere but California but I have heard enough from other states here on the forums and it is all do-able, just as what kind of car one makes, it's up to the builder.

Or, you make one from scratch as you have. However, this is all a moot point because we all have a choice, some will buy a reproduction body and some will buy a cool old car from someones back yard and make a cool car out of it. It's all what we choose to do.

I'm with timothale, if someone wants to do it they do it.

I would agree.

After 55 years of obsession, and 40+ years of helping others build their toys, I have found that no two enthusiasts agree on everything. If they did, we would have ONE KIND of car being built ONE WAY! How boring would that be!!! :-(

I should add two more things I've learned.... "NOTHING STAYS THE SAME"! ...and... "EVERYTHING OLD IS NEW AGAIN"!

What is popular today will not last. What goes out of style will be back someday. I've seen these cycles come true too many times to ignore. Some may not want to believe this, but we can talk about it again in a few decades, and they will probably be wanting to change their opinion then. :-)
