exhaust collector length ?

i have seen how collector length effects power. but what if the whole exhaust system is the same size as the collector ? thanx

I asked the same question in 1969, and never got an answer other than "you can't do that," or something along that line.

See if you can dig up David Vizard's article (actually an excerpt from one of his books that was published in one of the car magazines) about low-noise low-restriction exhaust systems and the use of a terminator box to mimic an open-ended collector.

The basic idea is to work out your ideal collector length, then use a big empty volume at the end of the collector to make it think it's dumping into atmospheric pressure air, but still containing the exhaust gas and routing it into a low-restriction muffler system. He said a big Flowmaster muffler or an empty muffler case would do, as long as each side had one that had 10 times the volume of one cylinder for a V-8 engine.
