Exhaust Damage Paint
I have a question about exhaust gases and paints. I have just re-ran the exhaust on my 49 Chevy. I opted for a side exhaust with oval tips. (I liked it from a set up on another guys car) Anywhooo, I was just thinking that exhaust gases must be blowing on the the paint when driving down the road, and what about start up, especially with moisture. Does exhaust gases within about 8 inches of the body produce long term damage to paint or promote general corrosion of the body? I am wonderingt because I have seen what spilling gas around a gas door can do overtime, or am I just being to anal again? Confused at the moment. 09-10-2005 06:40 PM

As long as the gasses aren't directed at the paint I don't envision any problems. If the water from the combustion products that come out of the exhaust tip during start up on a cold morning don't splash on the paint, you don't have a thing to worry about. Just in case, keep it properly waxed and you are doubly safe.
