Exhaust Header wrap...No! No! No1

Early this spring I put header wrap on very loose, didn't cover entire header. I was having high engine compartment heat build up at idle and I thought this would help heat pass out thru headers. WRONG! First thing that I noticed was engine got hotter quicker when sitting at stop light. Soooo I thought no big deal I will just take them off. What a surprise the headers has rusted big time under the LOOSE wrap. They were only on there about two to three thousand miles but a lot of surface damage to pipes. MORAL: don't put on header wraps on your street machine. Looks like a new set of headers from Santa!! ...DAVE

I have seen headers blow out from rust at the first turn because of hot spots. Was yours rusty everywhere...?? A good quality coating is your best bet.... But the World of 2003 doesn't have an answer yet.... A friend of mine has a 63 Galaxie with a 557 Big Block and the car sees about 300 street miles and 30 to 50 quarter mile passes and a ton of garage storage time and his high dollar coated headers still turned to crap!!!!

Heavy gauge stainless guys, it's the only thing that will stand up. I honestly don't understand why they still make steel light gauge headers, bending stainless pipe is no big deal and the tubing is the inexpensive part of the manufacturing costs. If a company just made stainless mass produced pipes they would put Hedmen/Hooker and the other cheapo's out of business. Ever see how fast a computerized pipe bender can bend up a set of pipes and cut them to length? Literally seconds and they are perfect after to boot. What do you need then? Some welding and flanges? Even if they were $30 more to cover the material, people would never buy a steel header again.

HEY SAND: Every where the wrap was the pipes had multiple layers of rust that came off with the wrap material. I was amazed at how fast they detoriated in such a short amount of time. I can see how if you had a tight complete wrap it would completely destroy a set of steel headers quickly....I thought 4 JAW was supose to tell us these things before they happened it appears he was asleep at the at the header.....DAVE
