What kind of engine, and what is he looking for? Something mild or wild, mellow or noisey? Too many options here.

Then go outside and measure it. You need to be a little specific. It helps when you let people you are asking what engine is in it, makes a huge difference. Go with 2 or 2 1/4 or 2 1/2 or 3.

That helps. It is really all up to what he is out for. The biggest issue will be emissions. If you go with a single set up, and the engine is modified, maybe running a single 3 inch would work for him, and still sound good. Of course the parts (cat, if using, and muffler) easy to get from a local shop.

Oooopps, is this truck a dual cat system or one? If one, above would work good. He would not have to worry about the O2 sensors being an issue.

If two cats, go with true duals 2 1/4 or 2 1/2, and again the cats are easily purchased. While he is at it, have him get high flow cats and mufflers of his choice. The O2 sensors and their bungs can be welded into the new pipes easily.

all he is looking for is more gas mileage,so i thought i'd do an exhaust, an msd box or jacobs, and maybe some factory headers off of another car.and other small things like that.

Then, run 2 1/2 duals with high flow cats. Borla, flowmaster or any high flowing mufflers. Will sound good too.
