Exhaust Pipe Sizing - Help
 
I have a 1972 chevy nova street muscle car. It needs a new exhaust system. It has a 550 HP Big Block Chevy. The headers have 3-1/2" collectors.

Should I go with an X-pipe type system or just standard dual exhaust or doesnt it matter?

What size exhaust pipes should I use? 2-1/2", 3", 3-1/2"?

I would like some free flowing mufflers that are loud. Can you recommend any particular make or model?

well for true duals 2 1/2 should be enough...but if you are going to run a y-piped setup you may need somethin around 3 1/4 inch to 3 and a half....pretty uncommon size tho. Magnaflow makes some great flowing mufflers

I would use a x pipe with 3" and Hooker Aero Chamber mufflers. Nice looking nova by the way!

The dynomax bullet would meet both of those standards.

A big power boost would be 24-28 inch collectors then 3" H pipe.
If you have room an expansion chamber would be a good move,
then the mufflers of choice for sound. I am a big fan of the Dynomax line and Magnaflow line.
Look into David Vizard's exhaust system design that includes expansion chambers.

X-pipe will help flow and can free up a few ponies. I run warlock mufflers on my 396, they sound incredible, and have knockoffs built in so you can go to straight pipe sound, and performance, in about 1 min!! Easy to set up an electric dump as well (my next project!)

I run with hookers to 3", flowmaster s pipe, to pypes x, to 3" magnaflow mufflers.

I would run 3" pipe (even though 2.5 would be enough). If you decide on 2.5" (for more ground clearance) then use mandrel bends. A 2.5" system built with mandrel bends will flow like a 3 inch system using crushed pipe.

Make a H or X pipe right after the transmission the use a pair of hooker aero-chambers. If it is too loud, install a pair of 12"x 4" dynomax bullets in line (before the mufflers would be best but after also works).

If you decide you want to quiet and good flow, then install a set of dynomax super turbos.

It sounds like most of you guys are suggesting an H or X pipe setup. That's fine. I'll educate myself more about it.

I have x pipe and thrush glasspacks on my truck, sounds great but not obnoxiously loud ,glasspacks arent broke in yet. Th x pipe gives it a verry good sound.

Relative loudness is also listed with sport being louder than street.
