Exhaust Welding Question

A friend of mine told me I can weld stainless exhaust tubing with my mig ,without using stainless wire or changing gasses .Is this true ?

Pro's /cons...???

Yes, but then you have rusty joints. The weld and area around it no longer are "stainless"

That was my first thought(rust)

Do i need to switch gasses if I go with stainless wire or is argon/co2 ok.

The welding supply guys will tell you no you cant do it. Or mine always did.

But honestly I have ran out of gas and grabbed the bottle off our "steel mig" and used it for stainless on the MIG and the TIG.

I did not have any problems at all. Was there any? I dunno. I am sure an expert could argue it as my welding salesman always did.

But it looked great and we had no structural problems that I am aware of.

I have also used normal steel gas in combination with stainless wire to weld stainless, and it worked. Probably there's a bit more splatter or something only a professional would notice. The joints will be blue afterwarts, but there's an etching paste especially for this. You brush it on, wait an hour or two and rinse it off, then the stainless will look as before welding. The blue colour is only on the surface and this paste contains acid and just removes that thin layer. It should be rust free again after this procedure.
