Expanding braided hose?

I need some help. I bought some 6AN stainless steel braided hose with a rubber lining. It really seems too small to slip over my 3/8" brass barbed fittings and there's not much room where I am using it to force it on. I'd appreciate some practical solutions for expanding the hose ends a bit to allow the fittings to slide in more easily. Thanks in advance.

The steel braided hose is really meant to use the type of fittings that are made for them, like from Summit, Russel, Earls, Aeroquip, etc. Barbed fitting ends don't really fit too well as you've found, and the clamping force applied by a standard hose clamp is iffy because of the braiding, as well. Best bet is to use the push-on fittings made for the hose terminated w/the threads of whatever it is that you're mounting the hose to.

I forgot to mention, if you have to use the barbed fitting w/the braided hose, remove the braiding back far enough for the barbed fitting to be inserted into the hose, then clamp it over the rubber hose not the braiding.

I agree with cobalt327 that you should use the proper fittings for the hose. But back before I got a set of Koul Tools: http://www.summitracing.com/search/P...FQxihwodJyU_Qw and was assembling these fittings by hand I would use a short center punch, a fairly fat one, dipped in Vaseline and push it into the hose to open it up a bit. Made assembly much easier. This might help with your barbed fittings, too.

*I can not be held responsible for hose/fitting failures*

Thanks. I have used these before without an issue-and doesn't Spectre and other sell the clamp/covers for just this application. FWIW, I do peel the braid back to get the clamp on the rubber and I have used the center punch trick. Thanks.

This worked for me,I shot some Armor-All in the hose end and some on the barb and it went in easier,or some K-Y jelly may work. Also here's a handy chart I found for anyone wanting to convert to braided:http://www.ask.com/wiki/AN_thread
