We have a few members around here who are professionals in the auto interior trade. I'd like to know how long it took before you were confident in your trade? I do realize though that in any trade, you are constantly learning as techniques evolve. I've been studying this craft for a year now and really enjoy it. As time goes on, I feel more confident in what I'm doing. And although mistakes do happen, I consider it a learning experience.

You are right, techniques evolve, but the basics are still the same. It's the one industry that machines will never take over and changes come over decades, not weeks or days like in some industries. I learned upholstery in a furniture factory. All the principles of sewing are the same whether you're doing a sofa or a car seat. It took me 5 years of training to get to be a pattern maker, and I haven't stopped learning yet. As a pattern maker, if I made a mistake, it could translate into hundreds of things being made wrong, not just one, so I had to be confident. The more things you take apart and put back together, the better you get at it.

No one lives forever, the trick is creating something that will.

I have been in the business for 6 years and i am still learning. I am very confident in what i do. It took me a few years to get it and i am now doing some higher end cars that 3 years ago i would have been scared to even touch it. I have had a ton of practice and that will make you confident. also with my customers if they want somthing and i know i might not be able to do it i let them know ahead of time and then you dont have that pressure on you to do it right the first time and tell them it might take you some time to figure it out and if there ok with that thats good and if there not atleast you were honest. It takes time and some pick it up faster then others but with practice you gain alot of confidence.
