exterior voltage regulator

I have a 69 lincoln 460 in my coupe and its time to wire it up. I have the origional alternator but I'm not sure how to wire it up.All the schematics I see online for Ford show an external VR... Did this car come with an external voltage regulator (i dont have one) how can you tell if its inside the alternator?
