External Trans Cooler, Radiator Cooler, or both? 2004R & 383 SBC

I'm putting a freshly rebuilt 2004R behind a chevy 383. This setup is in a 1970 Impala. I was looking at buying a new aluminum radiator, for a little better cooling, and because the original one I have has been dripping from the fins.

What woudl be the best setup for cooling the auto trans? I see that I could buy an aluminum radiator that will fit in fine, with a trans cooler inside, or I could buy an add on trans cooler. Is one better than the other? Would it be a good idea to run both in series of each other?

Hi Joe,
Heat is the biggest reason for transmission failure.
Plum the return line (from the rad to trans) with a
cooler, that way the fluid is brought down from about 225* to about 190* then further cooled buy the cooler, this imo is the best way to set them up.
Also, when it's severely cold you can reverse this & use the rad to keep the trans fluid warm, or cover it, as you can over cool as well, (trans fluid to thick).
