While working on a friends car the part throttle operation seem sluggish. I noticed there was a block off plate between the egr valve and the intake. The egr valve was still connected and no code thrown. Online there are numerous places that sell such a device. My speculation is, that it was installed to somehow make more power.

The egr valve introduces more intake charge( combustible or not) into the intake for all but full throttle. This acts like an extra barrel of a carb to drive around on during part throttle . Perhaps some detonation protection from part throttle load too. In turn allowing more timing advance without threat of detonation retard for part throttle power. If it was blocked there would be less overall cfm entering the plenum space.

I cleaned out the carbon build up and verified egr valve operation, and removed the plate using a fresh gasket instead. The vehicle performed much better, from a wide range of throttle engagement. My question is why would somebody use these egr plates ? In theory the egr closes for full throttle anyways. You are only losing part throttle power.

Do you agree? Am I missing something?

I have a 4door that is a train wreck and since all the interior trim pieces are out of my budget I want to put an interior from a newer car in it.

The local salvage yard has NICE interiors from anything like a 2001 BMW 730i(or whatever) to late 90's towncars... I would love something like that in there... I can do plenty of welding, so that's not an issue... I was thinking of using the old dash, but newer door panels(maybe custom) and the new model seats and everything... I would put in an aftermarket steering wheel (grant) and I think that would be fine... I am going to paint it flat black, lower it 3", and place all the chrome with GLOSSY black...

Hey fellas had a tough week found my oldman in bed on mothersday he had passed..was only 60 :( well as you can imagine my brain was allover the place.I left the clear coat I had been spraying in my flg4 & it got really hard tried acetone, lacquer thinner, paint thinner, gun cleaner, had to scrape most out with a tiny screwdriver.Well the seal that goes behind the tip got damaged&now its leaking like a hf gun.
I've tryd an o ring to no avail.I went online to purchase some but there a special order can't get em till sometime after the 27th&all I had to do was spray a hood&was done.I have a couple other guns but this is what Im comfortable with.I was planning on upgrading to a satajet next month but now Im just ordering another flg4 so I dont have to wait long.
I tryd the hardware stores to find something that would fit in place of the seal no go.Anybody ever see this happen as its leaking like when you pull the trigger with no air hooked up but theres also fluid coming from where the rear of baffle connects to the gun?My last question is what do you guys use to clean up if clear etc dries up in your gun?I considered aircraft stripper but didn't know if it would remove the agonized finish.Well thanks fellas.
Please excuse any typos or terseness: this email was sent from my mobile and I have clumsy fingers.

Being that most of the heavy design and fab work is done on my Astro Van my mind is starting to wander to other projects.... I have a '31 Model A Tudor Sedan "basket" sitting on a pallet in the hoist room. It's been sitting patiently for almost 20 yrs.

I have been doing some work in CAD to get the body into my computer. I got a decent start this afternon. I have a few plans for this one.

1.) Twin tube frame.

2.) Very low (natch)

3.) 331 Cadillac Engine (My engine guy and I have been talking about it a bit)

4.) Pro Street tires and wheels (because I have them)

5.) Kind of rat roddy looking but with a little finese thrown in.

6.) Altered wheelbase with a bit different rear body treatment. (You'll see) :)

Here are a few screen shots of where the CAD model is currently.

I have done all of the modeling in UG using some basic dimensions off the body and using a 1/16th scale kit to get the majority of the shape correct.

There is still a lot to do, doors and windshield are next. Getting the overall shape done was the hard part. I'll start laying in body mount points as a ref. I am modeling the body stock to begin with then I'll "cut it up" later.

I like this view.

What'cha think?

So on the heels of screwing around with my Carb.....I run into a question.
I understand I should see 0.020 transfer slot exposure front and rear. The issue is I run alot of initial timing, 24*, then add 12* vacuum advance. So with initial timing at 36* I can't get it to idle down if there is any slot showing at the rear. And as much as the proper slot exposure is important, are you not instantly changing it anyways as soon as you set your idle. So with the rear slots open at all, I can back the idle screw right off the arm and it still won't idle below 1300rpm. With the rear slots closed I can idle down as normal. But again, now I'm moving the primary starting exposure anyways.
Next question, under heavy braking, very heavy, it stalls, every single time. I read the float levels were possibly to high, but they just aernt, if anything they are too low as under heavy cornering it stumbles bad.
So there we are, alot of questions I know. And I have set holleys up before, and never had so many issues.....kinda wanna toss it in a river and go buy a new Carb.

This is my first motor build. The top and bottom end were done. I had a shop rebuild the shortblock.

Last weekend I broke in the cam. I had to shut down a couple of times for some leaks, but it did get 20-25 min of runtime with varied RPM's between 2,000 - 2,500. Due to transmission issues I didn't get to drive it that day. During break in the engine sounded great and there were no problems.

Thursday I got to drive it around some for the first time and logged 19 wonderful miles before the engine started making a "smack" noise. :pain:
I had been running without the vacuum advance all day, when I decided to plug it in. I drove for maybe half a mile before I decided this was a step in the wrong direction, so I unhooked it. Then I drove another half mile or so and that is when the noise started (maybe this is coincidence). Was I supposed to back off base timing before hooking up the vacuum advance?

I did find one melted plug wire on the header, so I replaced it and wrapped with header wrap...but that didn't make a difference. I pulled each plug and labeled what cylinder they came from (see attached pic). I tried to back off timing, but that didn't make a difference either.

So I need ya'lls help to figure out what is going on. I let the engine idle for a few minutes today while I captured the noise on video (the mic didn't do a good job of getting the sound though). After I was done I felt each header with my hand and they all felt the same. I then used my hand held infrared thermometer and verified that each pipe was in the same ball park (105º-125º). So it seems like all cylinders are firing OK.

The smacking noise sounds like metal on metal. I verified piston/valve clearance, and valve spring retainer clearance before installing the engine. The noise is irregular though, I would expect it to have a regular "beat" if it was something in the reciprocating stack.

I am tempted to remove the accessory belts to see if it is something stupid like the water pump or power steering pump.

Sorry for the long post, just trying to get all the relevant info out there...I am very paranoid right now!

Here is what I have for hardware:
SBC 350 (bored +.060" and decked .020")
Factory crank
Factory rods
ARP rod bolts
Sealed Power H345H Hypereutectic Pistons (H345-60) (1.548" compression height)
Total Seal Rings cast iron, second compression ring is gapless (S9090-60)
CompCams XE274H cam (complete K kit with lifters, springs, etc)
Factory Vortec heads
Melling M55 oil pump with Melling hardened shaft and Melling pickup)
HEI ignition
ACDelco R44LTS plugs
Howards Cams fuller roller 1.5:1 rockers
Quadrajet 750 CFM
Edlebrock Performer RPM intake

Other stats:
9.9:1 compression ratio
Squish is around .046"
Base timing 24º (total is around 34-36º, not sure when its all in by, as I have not gotten that far yet with tuning)
The engine was balanced
Oil pressure is good 55+psi
Not sure how accurate the dash temp gauge is, but is it a little on the hot side, but not in the red.

On the way home we had planned to go to lunch at one of Guy Fieri's Diners Drive-inns and Dives as there are a number there being he lives there. Both us being foodies we get a kick out of the show and watch it often, just last night in fact. So I went on line and grabbed a couple off the list, La Texania was one of them which my wife wanted to go to so we did. We just finished off our lunch and in walks Guy! LOL It was damn funny and we got a photo (my wife has a mint stuck in her cheek) and left. By the way he doesn't drive a 67 Camaro Conv every day (knew he wouldn't but just thought I would say) he drives his kick butt Jeep. Check out the license plate. :D
I also have a idiot light connected that shows charge and a voltage gauge as well. Since replacing the pulley, my light no longer works the way it did. (doesn't come on without a charge) Now I have to rev up the engine to 3K rpm for the alternator to begin charging normally. Does this mean I have to replace the self- ignitor in the alternator, is it going bad? I believe I've replaced it before, or should I just replace the whole alternator with a different model. Any recommendations? 12si? etc. that are more dependable than the older model S10?

Like the title says, I have a dual exhaust from flowmaster. Nice pipes. All mandrel bent. System came with 40 series mufflers.
The noise is really to much for a daily driver. It would be cool at the strip but not so much if you want to turn on the radio.
I am looking for real knowledge...

I am looking for real knowledge suggestions as to which mufflers/brand would be mostly quiet and would not allow the horrid droning to resonate from the exhaust.
Looking for suggestions from those of you who have mild exhaust sound from your mufflers.
I am looking at some magna flow XL series 3 chamber style.
