I have a 57 short-bed. I almost bought a spare tire bracket from Craigslist, but noticed it was on a long-bed and did not have a strut that goes through the fender (totally mounted in front of the fender). Please confirm that the bracket for the short-bed is different from the long-bed? Is there more than one version of a fender with the hole for the spare tire strut? The model I need also has two struts that that mount on top of the side rail of the P/U body and a brace that fits between the fender and P/U body for added strength. The brackets are hard to find. Does anyone have one for sale? Finally, I have a machine shop that could fabricate the brackets and sell them for around $200 (at cost). Do you think there are others out there who are looking for a bracket that would meet or exceed OEM specs?

I took a picture , but I do not have his permission. I will put this one up . In low quality at bad angle. I will see if he okays the display and show more. People can be touchy about this. He told me there was never a real car in the movie it was a prop. This is the only one.
Thanks to all the help with figuring the 5.7L Vortec Chevy was the way to go..I began to price out a full tune up of the motor which included if im not mistaken...Plugs,wires,coolant flush, oil change.

Now I am not mechanically strong I can do some stuff and definitely an oil change. I was priced $400.00 for the tune-up.

Is $400.00 too much or is that reasonable? I just want to make sure that I am not getting screwed over either at a local shop or a chevy dealership.

Thanks Guys! :welcome:

Roof of a 51 Chevy, slightly bowed but has a fairly tight curve at the ends above the doors. And I'll stop at the factory trim in the rear, how do you work the PVC to shape? Apply heat and press into shape? Also, what's the best way to attach it to the roof? I can use panel clips above the doors..would I need to double the board there and put clip ogles on the inner board, and what glue? PVC glue? Or landau high heat contact glue?
Thoughts? Thanks

Ps, what about abs for door panels? These are flat but same question as to glue? And again , clips? Would you just double the boards up with holes in the back board, or just use a single board, which clips then? Because wouldn't want to see the clips through the vinyl...

Im getting ready to paint my frame and other miscellanious suspension parts. I couldn't blast the frame but was able to wash and grind most of the gunk and rust off. I was expecting to get perfectly clean metal but instead Im getting %85 clean metal with some slight areas of light brownish red layer (rust.?) Im having a hard time taking it all off especially in small tight corners.
What should I use, besides grinding, or blasting, that will get the framer ready for Epoxy primer?

Some things I considered
-Just shooting Epoxy as is...
-Getting a small grinding weel and try to get to all the hard spots
-Using Evapo-Rust If I do and cant dip the metal parts in the solution, Can I spray it on?
- Selling the project and buying something semi-complete.. LOL

By the way this is a 1940 Desoto Coupe that Im dying to get on the road. Ill post pictures of the frame later

I sprayed clear coat for the first time this weekend over HOK gold metallic on the door jams. I notice that it stayed tacky for longer than I thought it would, Summit heavy c/c. I spray a heavy coat since I had made more than I needed. It turned out well, the only thing was that it was tacky for around 30mins. What I need to know is when I start to c/c the rest of the body an I'm spraying more than one coat at what point do I start with the second coat. What I've read is start with the second coat when its tacky, but what if the tackyness stays that way for 30 mins. Or should I start the second coat just before the first coat starts to dry? Mainly worried about solvent pop.
The only other thing was that their was about 2 table spoons of metallic paint still in the cup an I just pored the mixed c/c into it, don't know if that would make a diff.
