Extra Credit Report about a Hemi
 
Ok my science teacher told me that I could get some extra credit by writing a report about why hemispherical heads on a hemi are so good. And he wanted me to find out if there was anything else about the Hemi engine that made them such good motors. Can you guys help me on this one?

A lot of people think Chrysler invented the hemi head, when in actuality it was the aircraft industry.

European cars were using them near the turn of the century! Chrysler didn't even call the early models by the name 'hemi'. They called them 'dual rocker shaft' engines.

Didn't they also call it, umm, what were they called? the 354s, in desotos, firepower? something like that. Willys36 might know, im only 19 so I havent been here long enough to see any in person that I can recall.

Chryslers had four names on their valve covers. Most common was FirePower on all but Imperial cars. Imperial was on Imperial valve covers. They also made them with Marine and Industrial on the valve covers. Actually those latter two are desirable for hot rodders 'cause they came with 4 dimples on them to clear the bolts on adjustable rocker arms which became performance upgrades. A few FirePower covers had the dimples too (Chrysler 300s?) but the vast majority of them were plain.

Dodge engines had RedRam and Desoto had FireDome on the valve covers. Sometimes those two had blank valve covers too.

The Chrysler engines had the names stamped into the valve covers where DeSoto engines used a sticker. I believe Dodge used a combination of the two depending on model. Also most Chrysler hemis that were used in Dodge trucks had nothing stamped on the valve covers. I used these "no name" valve covers on my '53 and had them black wrinkle coated (powder coated) so they would appear similar to the later 426 hemi. (All part of my plan to see how many people will mistake it for the later version.) It's amazing how many people don't know what they think they do. :mwink:

The most desirable valve covers are of course the Chrysler FirePower ones with the dimples. I have seen them go for $$$$$$$$ on ebaY!

I'm sure it's those hunks of scrap iron that found their way between the frame rails of Pontiacs that your talking about. :mwink:

My 56 Desoto 330 did not have stickers on it. On the plug and wire cover/loom it read “Desoto Firedome Eight” I think firedome was one word, I might be wrong. Anyhow only one came with my engine so if anyone has one they would be willing to part with …

You're correct. The valve covers themselves were not stamped. The wire covers had a combination. Some were stamped and some just used stickers. Depended if it was a FireDome or FireFlight I believe.

That white T/A brings back memories. We had an 81 Turbo T/A, black w/ the T-tops, bird decal, gold pin-striping, engine turned dash, full gages, and gold Turbo wheels, the works. It was a marvelous car. Not a lot of power, even with the turbo, weighed SEVERAL TONS, those huge doors must have weighed a couple hundred pounds each, but it sure was a fun car to drive and NOTHING in history looked or looks cooler. Had three little kids and the bearings in the turbo were going out so we traded it in. Really hated giving it up.
