extracting engine codes

Hey guys

This isn't a hot rod question but I'm sure someone will know the answer.
I'm trying to check the codes on my moms 94 buick regal. I think its a 3.8L.
On the older gm's you can just jump a wire from the a and b pins and get the engine light to flash. In this car there's only pins in slots A,M,D, and J. Can I jump any of these pins to extract the codes or do I need a special reader.
Its the same size ALDL I've seen in the older gm's. I didn't think they started OBDII until 96 but maybe this was a transition year?

Thanks for the help

I would suggest going to an auto parts store that does free diagnostics and get the codes that way - they usually even give you a printout. Some 1995's have the newer ODBII diagnostics but '94 should still be ODBI.
