Question EZ Pass {electronic toll pass}

Rob Here!

Can Anyone tell me if there is a E pass that is good for multiple states?

Right now I am concerned with the eastern states.

I called Florida's "Sun Pass" & got a less than generic response.

How do the long haul drivers do it?

Thanks Y'all!

I make them on my computer. When ever I am out and about and in big shopping center parking lots, I will ride around and look for them. When I find one I walk up to it and take a picture with the phone cam. I also take a quick measurement. Then I put the image on my computer and print it in different sizes until I match up the measurements. I then stick it on my car. Works great!

Does that mean that with that bar code on your car, someone else is paying your tolls?......Not exactly cool........

Up here, we have 1 toll road. The ETR (electronic toll road) has cameras that read your rear plate # as you enter or leave the highway and they mail you a bill. Big trucks and frequent users have a transponder in their car and get a slight discount.

EZ-Pass covers the largest area in the north east, but I don't know of any universal 1's that work for difrent passes.. possibly ask ppl at a truck stop what to do.. always see them go thru the fast lane, and many with out of state/ region ( for EZ-pass plates )

The ones from NY are free and work in most states from NY north. MA was charging for them but they are free here now also.
Here is a link to the site

Fastlane site

If you look in the FAQ section it tells you where it will work.
Are you comming to my neighborhood ?

Being an over the road driver, my truck is fitted with:
1. EZ-Pass, it works in MA, NY, NJ, WV, PA, later this year when the OH turnpike finally adds the systems and gets them working, IN, and IL. My EZ-Pass was issued by the NY Thruway Authority. After looking it up- ME, NH, DE, and VA are also on the list. The list can be found here.

I frequently go through KY and all roads there are toll-less. I seem to remember having to pay the tolls in Kansas, and for the above, I have a company issued card for paying tolls on the Ohio Turnpike, I believe they can process credit cards too. EZ-Pass is supposed to be up and running around September this year. Some States also have a "fast lane", or "open road tolling" like PA, IN, and IL with their 55 mph toll lanes, others like MA have 15 mph lanes and others have some lanes around 20 mph. Most of the regular EZ-Pass lanes are 5 mph, and us truckers for one can get dinged for speeding in the lanes, don't know about the regular 4 wheelers though.

2. Pike Pass, for Oklahoma, our entire fleet is licensed there and OK gives all our trucks a Pike Pass which is mounted to the front bumper.

3. PrePass, I have it to drive by open scale houses and weigh stations when they are open, and the respective States also get paid for me passing those same spots when closed but someone forgot to shut off the PrePass system sensor systems (once again- Ohio wins this one), it allows me to bypass a scale in States that have them (thanks for cheaping out KY, NorPass is only good for there, and reads PrePass, but doesn't send the proper signals to our transponders so we can bypass those open scales), PrePass works by electronically reading the unit number and the computer system in those States checks things like truck number safety ratings, company safety ratings, and some States also check the truck weights with sensor scales, if you are within 2000 pounds of the go/no go weight you get pulled into the scale for a slow scale reading, then if you are very close again you sometimes can get a full stop scaling of the truck, mine is legal to 12,000 pounds on the front axle, 34,000 pounds for the drive axles, and 34,000 pounds for the trailer axles- or 80,000 pounds fully loaded without special overweight permits.

You can find ALL about SunPass here. but if you want the fast answer, it only works in Florida.
Information about the EZ-Pass on the Ohio Turnpike.
