F-body front fenders

I've got a 1979 Camaro with serious dings on the tops of both front fenders (collapsed shelving came to rest across the hood a while back). I will post pics as soon as my post count allows. As I seem to have more time than money I want to fix it myself. A friend recommended hitting the dents with a torch and lightly tapping out from inside and the hot metal will "just pop right back out." Is that a good idea or should I just get a hold of some aftermarket fenders and try my hand at adjusting gaps and all? There is rust bubbling up under, and through, the paint on both sides where there should be mud flaps too. I've always been intimidated by body work, I'm more of a tune-up guy. Thanks for whatever you can offer!

Well one thing for sure dont try the dry ice metod that's been discussed on a thread by MartinSr...He proved its a myth.

Torch not necessarily answer either. Can you get at the dings, dents from underneath with body tools, maybe a dent puller will work from the top?
Try no to stretch the metal, when hammering out.Youll probably need a skim of putty either way.If you have rust issues that serious ,maybe easier but not nessecarily cheaper to replace fender(s)
How did you miss the hood damage if you got the tops of both fenders?
my 2cents

I can't wait to post photos, it's sort of a mess, not simple dents. I think the hood was spared because of the movement allowed by the hinge springs. There is paint damage but nothing near what the fenders sustained. I'm afraid the metal may already be stretched at least on one side, it's pretty bad. If I can get the inner fender wall out I would have a straight shot at the problem from underneath. Would that even be possible without dismantling my whole front end? What would be a good place to get replacement fenders? Is JC Whitney still the place? I've been out of the loop a few years. Thanks for the ideas!

If you have original metal pay someone to repair them if you can't do it. Nothing fits like original GM.
