factory forged 454 crank and rods limitations

What's the limits of the stock forged con rods for a 454? It doesn't look like thumb or dimple rods..

Also... While I'm at it what's the limits of the stock forged crank? I believe it was a early 70s LS6 but not sure (the block for sure was).

I never really thought twice..... I know the rods and crank are forged because I saw a set of cast rods and the lines are way thinker on mine.

An LS-6 crank will have dark colored counterweights (tufftriding) and be factory cross drilled.

Back in the early seventies, when all we had was factory parts. BBC steel cranks and 3/8 rods were used regularly. A fresh set of SPS bolts and general clean up/check and they lasted thru many 7000+ rpm charges. Crank assembly needs to be properly balanced, The factory attempt was terrible..

The 468 bbc in my Monte started life as a 454 LS-6 crate motor that was installed in the late 80's,I'm not exactly sure when,(before I bought it).But its been well used & abused over the last 20 + years, and its still holding together. Not exactly sure how many miles it has on it,but I've been averaging 3-4000 miles a summer for almost 10 years.I rebuilt it a couple of years ago,and its cammed to turn a max of 6500 rpm, which it see's on a regular basis.I had all the proper machine work done at the time, the mains were align honed, block decked, balanced, etc.I also had all new ARP pro series bolts installed, rod ends re-sized,etc.As Bob said,a good balance job is critical to longevity.

cross drilled journals right (haven't seen many cranks) it is. The weights do look a little darnker maybe..

So for the rods I'll be okay to 500 to 550 hp and 6000 rpm and below? I'll put ARP wave lock rod bolts on it..
