Why was that thread locked? It wasn't that out of hand and three moderators were participating in it?

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I am a member of a fair number of Forums on which these issues are "debated"

It is my considered opinion that of ALL the boards which have had threads regarding these topics, ie Michael Moore's F9/11, and copyright issues, the comments and responces here are MORE polite and restrained than most others.
I attribute this to the fact that the posters/members here have more in common than any other forum I have read.

We have serious differences of opinion about these issues, but remember, They are opinions!
For the most part we've been able to differ without decending into gratuitous insults, I think that sets this board apart from every other board I've seen! (Especially in view of the fact that most Hot Rodders are a little more aggressive than most other people, IMHO)
There probably are'nt too many regular readers of SlashDot, the premier "nerd" site, here, though I've noticed a few fellow "nerds" around here. SlashDot has had a continuing series of threads on copyright issues for a long tiime.

One such thread regarding MM's encouragement of downnnnnloading F911 is located Here.
. . (Sticky keys spilled beer on KB the night I made the post -^I appologised for later) LOL! Instant Karma!)
The same issues that have been raised here regarding the movie download were discussed there in GREAT detail.
It boils down to this: Canadian and American copyright law differ somewhat but in this case the producer AND the distributer are allowing downloads.
Quote:
He's quoted as saying, "I do well enough already and I made this film because I want the world to change. The more people who see it the better, so Iím happy this is happening." What's more, the distributor--Lions Gate--doesn't plan to do anything about it either.
from this article, though Lionsgate hasn't made an "official" statement publicly that I could find)

In the case of some of the other suggestions regarding dongles etc, unless the copyright/patent holder has given permission, it's clearly against the law. (I know of one case where a company has stated they approve of using dongle defeating software for an obsolete product they no longer support)

I DID find a forum while researching this post which has a robust and (moderately) polite Political discussion forum Here.
Lots of heated discussion from all sides but apparently well moderated.

Anyway, I think we should stick to the Chevy/Ford/Mopar wars and go lightly on the politics.
This is a great community and it's worth working hard at keeping our cool to keep it that way.

~Roy.

Michael Moore obviously is a Ford or Dodge type of person! Wasn't "Roger & Me" a GM trashing movie? He called it a documentary too, but it was nothing but a bunch of damn BS!!!

I guess if a movie sucks so bad that you have to give it away, you can always hope that someone watches it and decides to actually buy a copy for whatever reason.

He has to be a Ford guy. There's no way we Mopar guys would never lay claim to him.

I heard a related news story this morning on the radio while driving to work. It seems that Linda Ronstadt, who was appearing at the Aladdin Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas last weekend, had to be escorted from the Casino after promoting Michael Moore's movie on stage. Apparently , according to the news, the audience started booing and it got so bad that hotel management became concerned for her safety.

Musta been a Republican convention in town.

UPDATE: It appears she was fired by the Aladdin because, according to them, they hired her as an entertainer not a political activist. Also, only half the audience booed, the other half cheered. Unfortunately for Linda, the half that booed walked out and demanded their money back. This is what led the Aladdin to fire her and escort her from the premises.

I find it so odd that so many traditional, middle or lower class americans are such hard-line supporters of the republican party. The only people who benefit from republican economics are the top 3% of society. Funny, gripe about jannet jackson all you want, she's the one getting the money back under bushes' cuts! Hows that for hippocracy?

Makes you wonder why the working man is so eager to support the man who represents the boss who is grinding you under his boot...

Think.

This is a common misconception that has been exploited by the Democrats. If this is true, please explain why the Republicans constantly are trying to lower taxes while the Democrats are constantly raising them. Oh, and don't use the argument that Republican tax cuts only benefit the richest either. Of course the rich wind up getting more dollars back, they pay more in taxes in the first place. Proportionately they are the same. Also don't bother using the argument that the rich use tax loopholes so they don't have to pay. If those tax loopholes were so important why didn't the Democrats eliminate them during the 40+ years they had control of Congress?

The Democratic party's main function now days is to tax working people and then distribute that money to people who are either too lazy to work, to illiterate to work, or insist on having one baby after another with one man after another. This creates a voting block that owes its entire livelihood to the Democratic party. A unique, if not sleazy way to build their party base.

What I think is very odd is that we are the country of the FREE.....We are FREE to say as we please and FREE to have our OWN opinion.....but yet Howard Stern got the boot from ClearChannel(huge Bush-backer) for making remarks against Bush, Whoopi got the boot from Slim-Fast(Bush-backer)for making remarks about Bush....and now Linda Rondstat gets escorted out because she upset 1/2 the crowd at a hotel by dedicating Desparado to Moore....Some cheered, some didn't.....Let me guess Aladdin Hotels are also Bush-backers?!
You know what I would like to see....I would LOVE to see Bush (or Kerry) campaigning at the unemployment offices trying to get the support of the Americans that are without jobs right now due to the fact that Bush has 'encouraged' companies to create oversea jobs in areas like India and China....I would LOVE to see Bush(or Kerry) going to the homes of the American Blue Collar workers that have been recently laid off(permanently) due to the fact that the company that employed them for 20-30 years has 'decided' to downsize(the newest Fad)
I also don't know why people complain when Gas prices go up....but are happy when taxes go down....They are paying the same amount overall....to the same person....just a different pocket.
Right now the government is only helping out the VERY rich companies/people....the average working family is getting screwed...but I hate to break the news to the people in Washington, the average working family(now unemployed probably) makes up 90% of the votes in the US.
Now I saw on the news recently that Bush is wanting to attack Iran.....because Bush has "evidence" that 8 of the 9/11 hijackers 'passed' through their country between Sept/Oct 2000.

So lets think about this for a sec. The US has its military stretched so thin now that it is about the break in Iraq, but yet he is wanting to start something with Iran all while trying to continue to occupy Iraq(where we are NOT wanted to begin with)
So anyways Bush has "evidence" that 8 of the 9/11 hijackers 'passed' through their country between Sept/Oct 2000.
So does this mean that Sheriff George is going to go after any/every country(allies or not) just because someone 'passed' through their country? If you really think about it The United States is who Bush should be going after next. Iran let 8 alleged hijackers through their country 1 year PRIOR to the WTC attack....but yet our own country let all 22 hijackers attack us.
The US can NOT control its own borders since millions of immigrants seem to make their way across the US borders yearly...and if we can not find millions of illegal aliens in our own country after they are here, how does the US expect Iran to find 8 people and identify their motives a year ahead of time.

Iran is a shi'ite nation....along with 60% of the Iraq population, who have been tolerating our presence becuase of their hatred of Saddam Hussein. If he starts a war with Iran the US will be fighting approx. 15 million Iraqi Shi'ites....I think that the 'occupying forces' will be done for.

So tell me again....what is this man doing to HELP out the people of the US? I seemed to have forgot.

Later,
WEIMER

That woudl be a reasonable thing to tell me if our taxes were a flatrate system (i.e. everybody pays 15%) but its not, its a graduated system. The more dollars you make, the higher PROPORTION of your income you have to pay in. Sounds fair to me, but the system crubles when you tell joe blow he has to pay 25% and rich dude has to pay 35%, but then you give the rich guy tax breaks so that the PROPORTION of his income going to taxes is even less than the dude busting his nuts every week to put gas in his car and food in his kids mouths.

I don't understand why we live in a democracy (well, democratic republic really) when people are going to vote on an uninformed partisan basis. Pointless.

Debating politics is pointless. No one will change their mind publicly and it will always be an argument if someone does not drop it.

Bush has alot of power in business circles, but what politician doen't? What politician is not tied to obligations by special interest groups? What politician does not have an agenda outside the White House? If you think any of them dont, then you are living your life looking through blinders.

Michael Moore had an agenda, and if you cant see that.......I dont know what to say. He hates dubya and will do whatever he can to smear his name. If anyone put that much effort in to any other politician they could produce the same results.

I wish we could all just quit this damned public damning of this military effort and realize that the troops that are over there supporting OUR country should not have to see and hear all this crap. They are not there by choice and we should support them whether we like the reason or not. ******ing about it is not supportive. My best friend is over there, and I support our government. That is all I have to say.

Chris

Good call Turbo, this is pointless. I''ve got three friends in Iraq now too, one of them a lieutenant who replaced an officer in one of the worst units in Baghdad, the former guy was shot four times, but survived. Big shoes to fill. Anyway, I do support out troops, but I feel we were a little frivolous deploying them, and that frivolousness with human life I oppose-
