Which fan?

Just wanted to know if you guys could recommend which electric fan to use on my radiator. The core of the radiator measures 28" W X 19" T. Most of the fans I see are either too short or not wide enough? What would be an acceptable size for proper cooling? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

re: Which fan?

Check out the Vintage Air 18" fan, it is not cheap but, it is the most powerful electric fan on the market. I installed one on my car and let me tell you this thing moves some air.

It comes with a mount, adjustable fan control, wiring, relay, etc...

re: Which fan?

The core is that size for a reason - to properly cool the engine. ANY fan system should ideally be designed to pull air uniformly through the entire core area. Best case is a puller stock fan with a properly designed fan shroud. Second best choice is dual puller electric fans to get as much core coverage as possible. Third choice is stock fan without shroud. Worst possible choice (which is what I run on my Willys due to space problems on the engine side of the radiator) is a pusher electric fan 'cause it will shove air through the core area equal to the fan area. The rest of the core is wasted.

re: Which fan?

I can't remember the specific part number, but I think its a FLX-295 Flexalite dual 12" 4600cfm fan that's about those dimensions. It's got a built in shroud which seems somewhat effective at pulling the air in evenly, but it will set you back about $400 fully equipped.

How big of a motor are you cooling down? is it strictly an engine radiator, or does it have a built in tranny cooler as well? How much space clearance do you have to work with on the back face of the radiator?

re: Which fan?

The radiatior does not have a built in tranny cooler, but I do have one installed in front of the radiator. I have a good 5-6 inches to work with between the radiator and the water pump (plan to go electric on that too). I cant really stick to the conventional fan and shroud because I cant put a tall shroud in place due to hood clearance and the biggest fan that will fit is 17".

So I figure the best way to go is all electric.

BTW, the engine is a chevy 350 bored .60 over.

re: Which fan?

Design thoughtfully. Remember, poor air flow is THE biggest cause of overheating problems.

re: Which fan?

One word "SPAL". I've dual 11" (I believe ) units which come in a shroud of sorts that you mount to your radiator. Very nice!

Here's a link to that fan I was talking about. With its mounting adaptors, it should fit on your application just fine. I'm using one in my '69 vette (350 w/.030 over).

yup, 16" electric, 3000 cfm +/-, found on any 3.8L ford V6, only downside is that it pulls a lot of amps.
