Fan issues on 97 camaro

Hello I have a little problem with my fan on my 97 camaro when the temperature gauge gets on the 1/2 mark the fan remains off but when it reaches 3/4 of the temp gauge it turns on and drops back to the 1/2 mark and the fan shuts off again and it constantly does that what may be the solution to this problem? But now when i keep the car idling in park it goes all the way to the red and it starts to smoke a lil.

That is how it is supposed to work, it has a fan control thermostat that only turns the fan on when it is needed, turns it on at high temp, shuts it off at normal temp. The fan does not run all the time.

Also, the fan switching and the gauge may run off different senders*, and one, (or both), may be slightly out of calibration.

* I'm not sure on that particular year...

rick your right the gauges and the fan are on seperate sensors on the buick motor but not the LS , the fan should turn on at idle at the same temp as it does in drive , if you over heat the car once it usually smokes the sensor for the fan , you can have the ecm programmed to lower the turn on point , what motor you have 6 or LS ? if its a ls you should have someone run a dia on the ecm .
