A friend of mine has a 94 Saturn SL 4cyl. If it sits and idles it will run until the fan kicks on then the idle will drop and kill the motor. The check engine light turns on with the fan whenever hes driving normally and it doesn't die, but I havent had a chance to pull the code yet.

Also, if it dies during idle it wont start again until it sits for a while.

Another thing he said was that at times when he pushes the clutch in rpms will shoot up fast and then take 4 or 5 seconds to come back down to normal.

Does anyone have a diagnosis off the top of your head? Clogged IAC maybe?

Dirty IAC would be a possible problem, very likely, also could be some vacuum leaks, like deteriorated hoses, or split hoses.
Try cleaning The IAC and the Throttle body first and see what you get.
Make sure you buy a can of Throttle body cleaner and dont use carb cleaner or gum cutter etc.There is a coating on the throttle bore and those types of cleaners remove it. Use the correct cleaner. Chrysler has a throttle body cleaner that foams a little and does a nice job. I have also used wd-40 it is not too aggressive of a cleaner, so its safe. Use and old toothbrush to scrub with.
