The RWB color scheme gives it away as an AMC.. It's a '66-'69 Rambler American. Can't narrow the year from that angle

You are correct- '69. It was based on the 390 ci Hurst S/C Rambler, and is one of my favorites because of Walker Evans' connection to them that year.

I followed Evans career a little bit in the 70's, he had some type of affiliation with Claude Tomlinson, the owner of CB Performance, what used to be Claudes Buggies back in the day. The son was a neighbor of a friend of mine, my friend was a quadriplegic and Claudes son gave him some posters of Walker in a Baja race. This brings back old memories, I had moved from Mn. and was really excited about trying to be a pit crew member on a race team, there were quite a few in this area at the time. Belk produce has a family team, I spoke with one of the gals that raced, it would be a hoot to do this but at my age I am afraid I would be stove up for a month if I tried... Dan

Shoulda used the 442 in the show, give the Firebird a break when they needed an action shoot across the beach. Go Rocky, go!

This is a little old, but James Garner also ran the Ramblers in 69. His AIR team ("American International Racers") ordered 10 SC/Ramblers (390 V-8 four speed cars, the only year the 390 was in the American body, and it was beefed up with convertible bracing from the factory). Here's the rest (from Rambler American - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"American Motors then got serious in this type of racing and signed up James Garner's "American International Racers" (AIR) team to a three-year contract. Garner's shops prepared ten 1969 SC/Ramblers provided by AMC. The cars were modified for the punishing Baja 500 race.[76] Raising the suspension and using Goodyear tires on 10x15-inch wheels increased ground clearance. All window glass was removed and roll cages were installed. The cars had 44 US gal (167 L; 37 imp gal) fuel tanks. Two cars were further modified with four-wheel drive. The AIR team built AMC's 390 cu in (6.4 L) V8 engines to blueprint tolerances, thus increasing horsepower to 410 hp (306 kW; 416 PS) at the flywheel. The cars were capable of 140 mph (230 km/h) runs along smooth straights at about 7000 rpm in fourth gear.

On June 11, 1969, eight of the Ramblers were entered into the passenger-car category and the two 4WD versions were in the Experimental class. Garner did not drive in the race because of a film commitment in Spain. Seven of the Ramblers finished the grueling race, taking three of the top five places in the passenger-car class. One of the four-wheel-drive cars came in fourth in its class. The AIR team included a car with Bob Bondurant and Tony Murphy that took first place. For one of the winning Rambler drivers, this was his first ever race and the experience launched the career of Walker Evans.[77]"

I don't know what became of the "three year contract", this is the first I've heard of that and I'm a long time AMC fan, have known about the Garner Baja Ramblers for a long time. Apparently one of them decided to back out...
