FE block code
 
after owning my '68 Mustang 390 GT fastback for 8 yrs, i recently developed a knock in the engine - I'm probably going to be pulling the engine to see if it a main or caps that are bad - having receipts for a complete overhaul of the engine in 1995, I started checking date codes, etc - i just found what i think is the block # on the lower right side of the block - D4TE - am i correct (& screwed) thinking this is a 1974 truck engine???

Yes that code is for a 74 truck engine, but that code is also on 360/390/& 410 blocks ,the only way to know what you have is to measure the stroke and in the case of the 410 the bore also. since you are going to pull the motor anyway ,when you pull the pan measure the stroke then.You will have people tell you to look at the crank for the casting # and that will tell you what you have but I hvae found crank's with the wrong # that have been reground to the right stroke. Point is you never know what you'll find when you open a motor up.
the stroke's on these motors are 360...3.5, 390(391)...3 7/8....410 same as the 390 plus larger bore.

Oh! if it is a 390(391) truck motor it has the strongest bottom end of all the FE blocks.

I'm not sure if that's good or bad - I was pretty sure the engine had been replaced at some time or another but I was hoping the dates were prior to the manufacture date of the car itself - I had previously checked the heads & exhaust man & they're casting dates were in 66 & 67 - since the rest of the car is correct/stock, I was hoping the engine was as well

PS - I'm assuming to get a GT engine, it doesn't matter if the block is "A" auto or "T" truck - it's all in the heads, crank, cam, intake - correct or am I wrong?

I always thought a 410 was a 390 with a 428 crank. My 390 was .060
over and was about 401 cu in :cool:

Oh! if it is a 390(391) truck motor it has the strongest bottom end of all the FE blocks.

410 should be a 428 stroke (3.98 inch) with a 390 bore (4.05). One has to be careful as there is another 410 here on the MEL block, aside from "410" the FE and MEL share nothing in common the latter being a 4.2 bore by 3.7 stroke.

406 is 390 stroke (3.76) with a 4.13 bore

428 is a 3.98 stroke with a 406 bore

427 is a 390/406 stoke with a 4.23 bore.

As usual every time I try to remember something off the top of my head I screw it up .Oldbogie is right The 360/390/410 all had the same bore (4.05) they changed the stroke to change the displacement .410 had a 428 crank (3.98 stroke) and was a Mercury-only available in 1966-67. But to go back to my first post you never know what you will find when you open a FE block up because so many parts of these engines will interchange the person or engine remanufacture's that build them would use what ever they had on hand to build another motor to shove out the door to make another buck.

I hear ya, I'm only up on FEs 'cause I'm helping a friend with his 427 Cobra, original not kit, one wicked piece of machinery.

Yes it is a 74 truck block. It is a fine piece and so is the truck crank. No problems.

agree The 410 cube is a 66-7 Merc big car only and is just a 390 with a 428 stroke (3.98) crankshaft. The 410 is externally balanced like a 428. That can be seen on the damper.

Like Kenny said, years can make a mix of parts. Verify what you have.

You are 100% right on that ,when I was in the Navy stationed in Pensacola,Fl my room mate got for his 21st birthday a 427 Shelby Cobra,on the weekend that he got it we went to Pensacola Beach on the way back we had to cross what the locals call the 3 mile bridge, good straight road only a very large hump in the middle so large ships can pass under, well when we came up on to the bridge he nailed it when we went over the hump it got air!!! I was watching the road and hanging on for dear life I was not watching the speedo and all I could think was we could not make the curve into Pensacola,well he did slow down and make the curve no problem.This thing scared the hell out of me . As we were driving tru town I made the comment that the car was very quick and that it shook me ....He turned and looked at me and ask me "Do you know how fast we were going ?"I told him no,how fast were we going?Then I really got shook when he said "about 140". Nothing before or after that has ever scared me as bad as that Cobra.I have never been in any thing that was street legal that accelerationed like it. I still want one!!!!!
