I have a 1950 Jeepster that I'm temporarily putting the front fenders on until I get around to painting it next fall. When I took them off I believe there were gaskets where they attach to the grill and where they attach to the cowl, they had grey putty like used on travel trailer corners. Does anyone know if this is correct? Also, should I paint the contact points for the fenders now, or can I just leave them in primer? Thanks, Tom.
Many vehicles from that era used a "welting" between the fender and body.
Here's a link to colored welting and another to just black. Most hot rod and classic restoration vendors have it too. Do a search and you'll have lots of choices.
Thanks. I know they didn't come with welting, but it might work well. I belong to the kaiser Willys forum so I'll ask them the question. I guess my concern is will primer hold up to the elements until I get around to paint? Thanks, Tom.
No. Primer, unless it's an epoxy type will not hold up to the elements - and some of that is even suspect. Take a look at some of your local beaters with primer - most will have rust starting to show through.
