I like the self adhesive gasket idea,but never saw it,where can it be bought?

You might want to search around at auto and truck parts stores for a universal seal/weatherstrip, the stuff is available in different widths and thicknesses and comes on a roll to be cut to lengths. A closed cell foam would be best and won't hold any moisture, you'll want it fairly thin so it compresses.

Another problem with not using the welting is, if the edge of the fender is not absolutely perfect, it will really show bad. The bead on the welting will hide these little flaws.....Something to consider.
