A few Questions on a 700R4 swap.

Hello as some of you guys know my wife and I are building a 350 powered convertible 69 beetle on an s10 chassis. I currently have a th-350 trans. For it but it has about 180,000 miles on it so it will need to be rebuilt or replaced. Well I figured that I might as well upgrade to a 700r4 because this is just going to be a toy for us, just cruising no racing, so the OD would be niceÖ. Right now weíll only be getting around 225hp from the 350 but I might rebuild it or build another engine for a winter project in the future, but I doubt weíll ever go over 300-400hp.. I have a few questions and hope I might be able to get some help.

First off how hard is it to rebuild a 700R4? I donít have the money to pay to have one rebuilt, and I probably wonít find a cheap trans that doesnít need to be rebuilt, so that Just leaves me to do it LOL. Iíve never rebuilt a transmission before, but Iím an Industrial Mechanic and have good mechanical abilities, I can follow directions well, am good at fixing things and putting things together and have rebuilt several hyd. Valves. Not quite a transmission, but still lots of little parts that have to be put back in the correct order. Iíve also rebuilt small engine carbs and a Subaru Hitachi carb before. Iím also always willing to learn new things!!!

Also will I still be able to use the same flywheel on the engine and same drive shaft yoke, I know I'll need to get a TV cable and bracket???

Iíve read a few sites about swapping from a 350 to a 700R4 and Iíve seen that they usually recommend going with a later model with the 30 spline input, because there have been a few issues with early 27 splineíd 700ís. If I were to rebuild a 27 spline would it be a good tranny for us, would a standard or performance rebuild kit make it about equal to the 30 spline or at least good for our application???

Iím asking because I know a guy who has a 27 spline 700r4 that he said I can have for $100. Itís from an 83 camero and has the stock converter with it. It has around 130,000 miles on it but still worked fine when he removed it. A couple years ago he replaced the engine and it came with a newer tranny so he swapped it out too, and it has been sitting in his shop ever since, now heís just wanting to get it out of his way. I figure for $100 for the trans and $200-$300 to rebuilt it doesnít sound like a bad deal, as long as it will hold up for us. Should I snatch this up and rebuild it when I get the money for a kit or hold off until I find a later 700R4???

Iíd like to put a shift kit in and maybe a manual/ auto valve body??? I know the autostick in the sebring conv. I used to have was fun to mess with, but is it worth it???

Also I did a quick search for rebuild kits and came up with 1 from jegs and a few from summit, would any of these kits be what we are looking for or do you guys have better recommendations???

Summit SUM-705004 for $170.95. It looks like just a standard rebuild kit

Summit SUM-705024 for $242.95 Looks like a performance rebuild kit
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku

TCI-378805 for $287.95, A TCI maximizer rebuild kit, but looks like more for off road apps.

And finally from Jegs
378800 - TCI Pro Super Rebuild Kit for $269.99

THANKS FOR ALL THE HELP, it is really appreciated!!!

Honestly, I'd look for a 87-93 model trans. The newer the better. They have many factory internal Hard part & Valvebody improvements. Here's a good 700R4 tip sheet.>>>>>

These also have rebuild kits etc..
