I am working on a '91 Chevy P/U, stepside with fiberglass rear fenders. There is some damaged areas, broken, shattered, broken off piece, on both sides of the lower rear area that is covered by the bumper.
My question is: What is the best way to repair this damage and what are the best materials to use?????
Should I fill the gaps with cloth and then use filler????
Have you priced new fenders? A friend had one painted about a year ago and as well as I can remember the replacement from GM was very reasonable. If you want to repair it, I'm sure some of the pros will help with that advice. David
Yes I did check the price for replacement.....ouch!!!!!...like $850.00...think I can repair it for much less!!!!!!

post some pics...inside and out...it can be self done, but to get it perfect you have to be very anal....a 91 probably used epoxy fiberglass materials.
fiberglassing is alot like painting-90% prep 10% glassing.
Attached is a picture of the damaged area, passenger side, rear lower fender corner!!!!

You are dealing with SMC like a Corvette. You must use evercoat's SMC repair resin which is a polyester resin if your using regular fiberglass mating for repair. If you go with the other option epoxy resin you have to buy special fiberglass mating which has no styrene in it. Usually the same company can supply you with a resin and a compatible matting.
Don't use regular polyester resin. Make sure it is Evercoat's SMC repair resin. If you use regular resin it can peel right off. The reason I like Evercoat's product is it compatible with both fiberglass and SMC, so no guessing what your working on. If you want Lord fusor makes really good products for SMC but it is much more money and you only have a small repair. It think Evercoat might sell pint's which would only be $10 to 15 I know they sell quarts for around $30.00
