fiberglass roof

Should I've fiberglass my roof on my 72' Nova it orinally had a vinyl top. It had really bad rust so we put black Por-15 on the roof that kills the rust it pretty much drys and hardens to the roof and it doesnt come. We put a layer of Por-15 and then put a fiberglass sheet on it and then put another layer of Por-15 on the fiberglass after that we bondo the low stop from the fiberglass then we sprayed it with a really high build primer. I went to a upholstery shop and they said to put a new vinyl top on it would be 500 because they would have to spray this foam that would smooth out the roof from the fiberglass job and the guy I talk to said the fiberglass was a bad idea put I am on a budget build and I dont know how to weld patches lol or a new roof which is out of the question. So now I am kind of stuck. PLEASE HELP

If you plan to put another vinyl top on the car I would grind off all the stuff you put on. Take it down to bare metal , spray some good epoxy primer on the whole roof and take it to the shop for the new vinyl.

Fiberglass was a really bad idea... can't use it with a vinyl top, can't use it w/o.. due to the fact you may not get the POR-15 off without destroying the roof panel ( or what's left of ).. you may be looking at a donor roof replacement depending..... the fiberglass material will contract and expand at a diffrent rate than the metal so it will crack/ lift.

Dude, buy some commas and periods, that was hard to read...
Is there any rust through the metal? If not, try this on a small section. Paint remover on the fiberglass, see if it loosens it enough to use a putty knife to remove. This sounds like a mess but other than a big arse grinder I don't know what else to try. Some of these other guys may have some better ideas, I think though if you can soften the crap you have all ready applied and scrape it off, you will be ahead time wise.
And POR15 is for metal, not fiberglass.

If the metal is rusted through badly, I'd save some coin for another top or another car.
Or some astro turf, shag carpeting, dirt medium with hemp seed, bedliner, anything to hide the mess you made.

I would not put fiber glass on a steel car... It will not hold up,, And will sooner are later pop off... Glass does not like to stick to steel very long..

Vinyl Top

If you can get the roof contours right it should not be an issue. Your 1972 Nova did not come with a "padded" vinyl top from the factory.

and when you buy a can of Bondo (R) you get a small peice of self adhesive chicken wire.. with the instructions stating to fill holes with it.... fiberglass has a diffrent expansion rate. and you put it on the hottest part of the car so it will show up.. if it was the floor, it would be diffrent as it's very cool and even some manufactures like Mercedes, fiberglass floors from the factory
