Folks,
If you live in California it is time to start writing your state assembly reps, state senate reps and Gov. Davis. You can look them up on the SEMA site and read more about SB708.

The way the smog laws are currently written cars 1974 and newer are smogged until Jan 1, 2003. After Jan 1, 2003 cars are no longer smogged when they are 30 years old. Example, my 74 Vette is exempt next year. SB 708 was introduced about 2 weeks ago. The intent is to change the smog law so that in 2005 all cars must be 45 years old to be exempt from smog. THIS MEANS ALL OF YOU CALIFORNIANS THAT HAVE MUSCLE CARS FROM 1961 TO 1973 WILL HAVE TO START SMOGGING THEM AGAIN. We have to beat this so lets make some noise and defeat SB708.

i have a question...

ok, so the cars will need to get smogged, but to what standards? if i have a 77 does the car need to pass the inspection laws from 77 or 03?

thats something that i never understood...

Your car has to pass the current standards for 77 model cars. Over the years, the standards have been "trimmed". When smog check first started, you only had to pass co and hc tests with a sniffer in the exaust pipe, and a limited visual check. Now its a "treadmill" and an extensive visual and functional test. Your 77 doesnt have to meet the standard for a new vehicle, but must meet more stringent standards than in the past.

If you live in CA, why not spend an hour this weekend to write an email or letter to Governer Davis and your assembly reps. Tell them to vote no on SB708. You can find their email addresses on the SEMA site.
Even if you don't own a car that would be subject to this change in the smog laws, why not write anyway and help out your fellow hotrodders?

It's kinda good news for hotrodders. SB 708 is still being written, but the portion that threatened to smog cars 'till they are 45 years old has been removed. As it stands now 1973 and older cars are exempt this year, 1974 will be exempt next year, etc. After a car becomes 30 years old it is exempt. This is the current law that has been in place for many years.
This is fine with me because I have a 74 Vette that will be exempt next year and it needs a kick in the pants. Like a blown fuel injected, alcohol burning 502.

California, who is already enormously in debt, keeps digging deeper with new foolish regs and welfare give aways. Better hope the recall petition on Davis makes it. Then all you have to worry about is the many thousands of tree huggers that keep coming up with the absurd regs.

Its nice how they propose to smog cars that were made befor the emmissions law was around.1966 was the start am I mistaken???
California and Ny compete for stupid laws.Me and a freind of mine have a party planned for when California drops off into the ocean.I hope you guys can make it.
