finding correct coil

I need to know how to pick the correct coil for an engine. Do you check ohmage, resistance, or what. The enjine has a cdi box called an igniter unit, with pick-ups on flywheel. It runs two coils, one per cyclinder and is a 12 volt system. Each coil has 2 wires going to it with a lead to a spark plug. And it is a two cyclinder motor. This is a running engine, what I want to do ,because the coils are so prominent, is to make a presentation out of them. Two nice chrome units with colored wires etc, etc. SO how do I pick the coils??

So....what kind of engine is this? What brand name etc. It sounds very similar to the ignition system on some outboard boat motors.

Henery, Thanks for your interest. The motor in question is a yamaha, around 1986 and is mounted in a hom-built airplane. I have been told its a Virago engine. Thanks again

You should be able to get the coils from a Yamaha dealer then.

I would write down all the information off the engine name plate that you can (atleast model and serial #) the dealer should be able to match you up with the right ones that way.
