Finding the VIN tag/number

Hello sirs,
I would appreciate you help on issue I have.
I recently bought Chevy Suburban. According to the guy I bough it from, it is 1979. On papers, its first registration is 1985.
The VIN in papers looks like 79 VIN with one wrong letter.

There is no VIN tag on the dash board, there is not even a hole where it should be. I have another dash board with this hole.

I am from Bulgaria, the vehicle is imported from USA in early 90' but I don't know how it is registered here (could be some unclear business).
Where should I look for the VIN tag? Could it be stamped somewhere on the frame or body?

Here is pictures of vehicle for illustration.

Thanks for the help!
Ivo

I would start by looking on the door jam/window pillar on the driver's side and maybe even in the clove box or passenger side door jam.

Look here for more data

There should be a VIN stamped on top of the frame near the steering box. Also there should be one on the drivers side dash that you can see through the windshield. I know you said there is not a hole there for it but those dashes crack quite often and people put covers over them.I can't tell in the picture if it has a cover or not but look and see if it is the original dash or a plastic or carpet cover. If so it may be covering the Vin tag.Hope this helps.

Hi guys,
Tanks for reply.
I will start looking for it.
I removed the dash board. It looks pretty original, lots of rust :-)
I will take some pictures of it.
Under the dash, I think, there is place for VIN tag, but no tag attached.

Is there a way to determine which year the vehicle is made, without VIN tag?
Any other signs?

Thanks a lot,
Ivo

the grill on your truck was only used in 78 and 79 earlier years had the marker lights outside the headlight bezels. and 1979 was the last year for round headlights.

if you see a spot for the vin on the dash but no vin plate im going to say it may have been stolen before it was sent to bulgaria (jmo) i have no idea how to register it in your country. look for any old paper work. good luck.

oh and let me say that from the pictures yout truck looks like its in good shape i hope you get to enjoy it.

It is definitely 1973 to 1980 because the hood goes all the way to the windshield. Starting in 1981 there was a cowl panel between the hood and windshield.

Hi helrazr3,
It is registered here, I have all the parers. Does not mean it is not stolen, though

The story I have been told is, a guy was working long years in USA, then retired and get back with it, then the man died some years ago, so I bought it from his mother, indeed I bought it from 87 years lady, all the papers on her name

It looks good and runs good, also lots of spare parts, hard to find here

I have a '73 crew cab , it does not have a dash mount VIN tag the tag is located on the driver's side rear door pillar, also stamped in frame rail, about even w/ center door post, also in rear cab panel , center of cab lower 'lip' . try checking there.

Hi Dave,
Thanks for reply.
I am sorry, I am not native English speaker, can you clarify it for me.
The pillar means this "column" between the doors? The one that the rear door is attached?
What is "center of cab lower 'lip'"?

Thanks for the help,
Ivo

The VIN number should be stamped on the top of the frame, on the passenger side near the motor mount, or just past it, as the frame starts to dip downwards.
