First post, asking for advice please.

Hi, my name is Andy and I run a business in Gloucester, England. One of my sidelines is upholstery, not really a commercial venture, more of a hobby. I use a Seiko STW-8B and commercial quality materials. I have been reading the forum here for some time and have been impressed by the quality of the work that some of you turn out. Gives me something to aspire too!

One of my customers has asked me to do a new interior for him. The seats originally were fairly plain, but he wants tuck and roll pleats as they used to be done, with wadding. That isn't an issue, I have made a test panel but I have a question over aesthetics.

The pleats are going to be vertical. The panel measures 9 1/2" at the top and flares out to 10.5" at the bottom. Now if I go for the required 1 1/2" pleats, that works out fine at the bottom, but it is going to be obvious that there is a taper.

The other issue is the number of pleats. I think good aesthetics calls for an odd number of pleats. Is this good advice for car seats too?

The one I am doing is the grey one on the left. Colour scheme is the grey vinyl with green piping as per the piece on the seat squab. Car is "Kermit" green. The magnolia seat on the right is a test piece I did some years ago and has seven "modern" pleats, but you can see the width variation.

If this was me doing it, I would try to convince the customer to change the center insert to a rectangle and modify the two side pieces. Nothing looks worse than odd shaped tuck and roll pleats. As far as number of pleats, it really doesn't matter if there is an odd amount or even amount, just what looks good on the seat in question. I am doing seats now for a '48 Chevy bench seat that will have an even number of pleats, and they will all be 2" wide, which looks the best on that particular seat.

No one lives forever, the trick is creating something that will.
