First project car, am I doing it right?

Redoing a badly rusted 78 caddy seville. Roof was the main issue, rust had eaten away a few inches of metal on the sides and front of the roof skin underneath the vinyl top.

Ended up being very aggressive with the angle grinder, cut off 2"+ margins. The whole car is zinc steel, and almost rust free elsewhere despite 33 years of outdoor storage, cadillac just decided to put very crappy tops on I guess!

So I welded in new 22 ga sheet, sprayed the underside of the new metal with enamel spray paint a couple minutes after sanding. Ground down my welds, brushed on a thick coating of unthinned duplicolor high build primer/surfacer, gave it 24h, roughed it up with 80 grit sandpaper, applied bondo coats several hours apart, finally applied a top coat of bondo professional spot&glazing. Then brushed a thick coat of duplicolor high build again, this time cut 3:2 with xylene.

Also on the A-Pillars and below the windshield, there is some surface rust that is not bad enough to warrent welding, I'm planning on using duplicolor rust converter and then a very thick coating of the high build primer, uncut.

I'm planning to paint it in a week or two once I finish some of the more minor bodywork elsewhere.

Can I look forward to it holding up a good long while?

Toss all that duplicolorrattlecanporrusstconvertor crap and do it right.

Once you get the rust removed, and metal properly nuetralized if soda or acids of any type were used, apply EPOXY. I prefer SPI, but PPG or even Kirker are good.

Use 2k primer over the epoxy.

Then paint with a 2k product, no lacquer (duplicolor comes to mind)

If the color is solid,, then a single stage 2k will be fine as you can cut and buff it.

If metallic then bc/cc is the way to go.
There are many grades available, if you want cheap then you will get decent results with MS crossfire Plus.

If you want a lot better for a bit more $, then ProSpray is the ticket.

Clear, there is really only one choice IMHO SPI Universal is the way to go.

btw, you arent saving any money using rattle can crap. the amount of material in one of those cans is little to none.

Buy a qt kit of epoxy and have 64 oz of sprayable material, what is in a rattle can 4 oz at most ?
A qt kit of SPI epoxy gives 64 sprayable ounces for a single dollar per ounce.

btw,You can brush or roll the SPI epoxy on if you dont care about the quality of the surface finish before any sanding.
