First time painting?

I want to paint my own truck.Im pulling the cab/bed off the body.I've never painted a car before.I understand a little about painting because I paint my engine and clear them. But I've never painted a car and wanted to know all the steps to do during the painting process.Any tips and advice on how to give a real good paint job would be appreciated.I spent well around $800 for all the stuff I need primer, paint, clear.Spray gun.etc.So I dont want to mess up to bad my first time. Also Maybe a little help on how to mix the paints.(Hardener,reducer)Thanks.

If you look in the product sheets for what you are using, this will give you much information, such as the proper mix ratio, time between coats, final sanding grit, ect. Read those and follow. Your subject has been brought up many times, so I suggest spending some time searching and reading through old threads and also the knowledge base.

I just completed my first paint job on the truck that is in my avatar. I used PPG products throughout. I must say that it has been the most rewarding task of rebuilding this truck. I restored a Camaro before this truck but I sent it out to have everything done (i.e. motor, paint, interior, trans, etc...). This time around I wanted to do everything myself. The paint and mechanical are finished and the truck is on the road. I just bought the interior from Roddoors yesterday at Carlisle.
Here are a couple bits of advice from things I learned along the "First time Paint It Yourself" path.
1) Buy the "Paint-U-Cation" videos from Eastwood. I would have been lost without them.
2) Use the "Search" feature on this message board. Every time I ran into something I didn't know how to handle I searched the archives on this board. If I couldn't find it there, I posted the question.
3) You will have blemishes, but work hard to keep them as minor as possible.

In the end, nothing beats the feeling of stepping back and looking at your vehicle knowing that it was your OWN hard work that made it turn out good.

Enjoy the process!
