First Transmission Rebuild - 1990 700R4

Hello everybody.

I have been rebuilding my first transmission over the past few weeks, working on it mostly over the weekends. Anyway, I think it is going ok so far, but I do have a couple of questions.

With the front pump bolted on, how hard should it be to turn the input shaft? It seems a little tight to me, but I figure it might be cause everything is pretty dry, plus I have sticky assembly goo inside. If this is not normal, then I have a problem.

I can't find one of the damn accumulator springs. Either I lost it, or whoever rebuilt it last left it out. From what I understand, this gives harder shifts? Does it put more strain on the transmission? Are the springs interchangeable from 1-2 to 3-4?

I guess that is about all I have for now. Next time I get a chance I am going to do the pressure checks. Hopefully I can have something figured out on that spring by then, so that I can forge ahead.

Thanks for any replies.

I would install an accumilator spring.

tight / stiff turning input shaft..depends on how stiff that shaft turns.

Any end play on the input shaft?

re: First Transmission Rebuild - 1990 700R4

Thanks for your reply. I am going to get an accumulator spring later today.

As for the input shaft, there is not really any endplay right now, and I have to use a decent amount of effort to turn the shaft. To the point where the splines hurt my hand. It seemed too tight to me, and I kept pulling the pump out and checking everything, but I could find nothing wrong. It spins nice with the pump out, but as soon as I bolt it in, it gets tight.

Somebody who has rebuilt many transmissions in his day has been telling me it feels normal since everything is somewhat dry in there. Just trying to get more opinions on that. I guess it makes sense, but I am still kind of worried about it.

I had this problem. I had no end play whatsoever. I found the torrington bearing under the selective washer on the input drum installed upside down.

That actually could be what is going on. I wasn't sure which way to flip that thing. I just made my best guess from what I could see on the markings, but I could have gotten it wrong.

first rebuild

The selective washer goes against the input drum then the thrust bearing lays on top of the washer, black side "up".

re: First Transmission Rebuild - 1990 700R4

Well there is good news and bad news. The good news is that the truck goes in reverse, plus forwards. The bad news is that it feels like something is dragging. It needs kind of high RPMs for the truck to move in reverse, and it shakes slightly. Going forwards it is a lot better though, and feels almost normal, but something is wrong for sure.

Any ideas where I fxcked up? By the way, I only drove it about 20 feet in this condition. Hope that in itself didn't mess anything up further.

Thanks.

Did you correct your problem with it being tight and having no end play before installing it?

re: First Transmission Rebuild - 1990 700R4

Well I found the thrust bearing installed upside down, so I fixed that. Afterwards, I had my friend check the endplay and he thought that it and the tightness was good. So I went ahead and installed it.

Ok, I do not have enough line pressure in first, and reverse.
