I just sprayed the 85 Monte SS and per my DuPont distributor used Fisheye Eliminator in the base and clear since the base was cratering with fisheyes. The base laid out great with the FishEye Eliminator.
I sprayed the clear without the Fish Eye Eliminator and it fisheyed like crazy.
I then mixed the rest of the clear that was ready to go with the appropriate amount of Fish Eye Eliminator and it turned out rather well.
The fisheye eliminator sort of saved my butt. Now I need to sand and reclear, do I use Fisheye Eliminator in the next couple of coats of clear?

The paint is Dupont Chromabase 99K
Clear is 7900 Chromaclear.

There is no way I would ever use fish eye eliminator, it is basically like adding silicone to your paint. The process to eliminate fish eye is proper cleaning of the surface to be sprayed, and proper contamination control.

I am astounded this car fisheyed. The owner has had it since new and swore there was never any silicone based material used on the car. I think he must have used Rain-X windshield solvent. I thought cleaning the car with prep sol would do the trick. I clean every vehicle with prep sol before paint.

A good wash with Dawn dish soap and hot water followed by a thorough cleaning with wax and grease remover will generally remove silicone, but silicone can be at times very difficult to remove. The owner may never have used silicone on his car but that does not mean the car has never encountered silicone.

This jack up really broke my heart. The owner is meticulous and told me he never used any silicone. This just thoroughly flustered me. I am guessing my next option is sand the clear to flat and then wipe with wax and grease remover then reclear. Is this the only logical option in your mind? DuPont has no reply yet.

I would give it a good wash first with Dawn then wet sand it. I would then give it another good wash with Dawn. There are some firm believers on this board who use Ajax to clean before painting. I would save the wax and grease remover for the last step and use new clean paper towels designed for the process. Some cheap paper towels could very well be contributing to your problem. Another thing about tack rags. When and if you use them do not press down on it with the palm of your hand as you wipe. Just the weight of the tack rag is all that is needed, just pull it across the surface, don't rub it.

The tac rag is something I forgot to mention. We tacked it down before spraying and then between color and clear. After the clear took a dump, I gave up.

Most manufacturers state flat out "do not use fisheye eliminator in base"?

Dupont only says "not recommended"..... it usually = Bad News.

With most products, when spraying wet on wet (I'm talking SS and Clear not BC), once you add fisheye eliminator you need it in every coat. HOK is the only one I know of that isn't needed in every coat.

If you get fisheyes in base just adjust your spray technique and spray a little less wet until the craters are filled in.

I wish my DuPont retailer would have known that. I could have avoided lots of aggravation.

Your fisheyes in the base most likely came from surface or air system contamination, the fisheyes in the clear came from the fisheye eliminator that was in the base but not in the clear........ If that makes sense.


The recommendation not to add eliminator to base is given because it will have an adverse affect on the clearcoat adhesion. That's my take on Sherwin Williams stuff, I imagine the same holds true for Dupont.

My air is filtered at the compressor and at the regulator. I have no lubricator and even use a last chance filter at the gun. My guess is the car was exposed to silicone at some point and it caused the initial problem. The FEE compounded the problem. From now on anything I paint gets scrubbed and sanded with fresh Dawn dish liquid.

Good move,,, Washing with Dawn followed by a wipe down with solvent based wax and grease remover is the first thing you should do when you begin a project,,, before you touch a thing with sandpaper.
