Flame questions

Hello, I have a 1973 Dodge Challenger that was painted with regular base coat clear coat.(im not 100% sure on the technical terms). I'm pretty sure the paint was PPG. I saw a 23T bucket today at a carshow that had flames on it that I liked. I know a guy that could do it but I really wouldn't want to have to sand down my clear, get the guy to airbrush the flames, and then get somebody else to reclear it. Can you paint flames over the clear? How are ghost flames done? Would they be easier? Thanks alot!

You can shoot the flames over your paint without reclearing the panels but nowadays that just looks tacky IMO. There's really not much extra work involved clearing the complete panels compared to how much time it'll take to layout and shoot the flames and border stipe, shadows, etc...
I would definatly clear the complete panels, then sand and do two more flow coats of clear, it's well worth the extra effort.

flames

If you were shooting solid one color flames you could shoot a one color single stage paint and it would work, but you would have a raised edge from the taping, and it would actually look AND FEEL like a decal.
In ghost flames, or multi color flames (most are) it involves fading colors, and when you do that the faded area tends to be flat....more like over sray than a good paint film.
This faded area is also very fragile. You can ruin a good fade just by rubbing too hard with a tack rag, or degreaser.
The clear ends up being the protective coat for the fragile faded areas, plus with clearing and sanding the tape edge, then more clear....you sink the flames down into the paint (opitcal thing) leaving a smoooooth shiny surface.
This is very important in ghost flames as it allows them to disapear at some angles and show up at other angles.
If you just do a hard tape line........just the tape line will assure that the flames are ALWAYS visible from any angle.
I say bite the bullet and sand and clear the thing.
