I'm a relative noob at welding. Done some minor stuff and probably not entirely correctly.
I know a flange weld is stronger than a butt weld. I understand how to do a butt weld, however I've seen many people tout different ways to do flange welds. I understand that you crimp the original panel and place the patch panel on however this is where the "different ways" come in.
I've seen people recommend spot welding the patch piece to the original.
I've also seen people recommend running an entire bead between the top of the repair panel/ bend on the flange and leave the bottom of the flanged piece unwelded.
Then again, some ppl say to run a bead along the top as well as the back of the patch panel/bottom of the flange.
I assume each one of those has merit in different situations, but i tend to over engineer things and would most likely go with the "more is better" mindset and run a line on both sides. I'm referring to general patching. I need to put in a patch panel on the right front engine well, a piece along the wheel well of the quarter panel and the floor pans. A couple others will more than likely pop up as the paint is taken off.
My question boils down to this:
From the years of combined experience, how do ya'll do flange welds and what seems to work best for you?
Thanx much for the input
Nico
