I quick guess is someone rewired the brake lights at one time and did it wrong. Do yhe lights on the outside of the car flash properly.

looked at them and all are the same i have no idea as to what is causing the problem.
i did notice that the blinker switch will make noise and the lights on the dash will only work (both at the same time) when turning the right hand signal on if using the left hand signal there are no lights on the dash but you can here the blinker switch working and the lights work.
have looked all over the wiring diagram and can find no problem also checked the wiring in the car i have run out of idea's hope some one here can give some advice

Rick,

I would bet money that the problem is a bad or missing ground to the turn indicators in the dash. The turn indicators seem to be back-feeding each other. If everything is wired correctly, this is only logical explanation I can think of that would cause the symptoms your car has.

I'm not familiar with the layout of the instrument cluster on your Thunderbird. Are the turn indicators in the main cluster? If so, do your instrument lights and high beam indicator work?

Hope this helps...

Joe G.

i'm guessing it's the turn signal switch cam plate? not too hard of fix if so.plate is around $10.00- would have to remove batt. cable 1st,-remove steering wheel-unscrew turn signal lever-remove 3 philips screws- and change out plate.(you would also need a steering wheel puller $17.00) still cheeper than taking it to a shop (around $70.00) or more.
TRY FIRST-- flasher with 2 posts if thats what you had in it originally.
'55 was a long time back.a lot of signaling, i had this problem a lot with school buses that were only 5 years old.

thank you both for the reply i did check the dash lights and the high and low beam ind. and they work i have not got the inside map light to work yet but i think the bulb is shot.
will try pulling the steering wheel off and see if i can replace the turn signal gear there.
this will take a while so will get back to you when i get this done.
i did paint the car could it be a ground on the turn signal light housing it self?
(even when the turn lights and stop lights work )
thank you for your help
