carpet is not bad at all. you will have to remove the front seat. 4 bolts. make sure you buy a good premoulded carpet. lay it out overnight to relax it. trim off excess in small ammounts, when you have it centered in the car.

floor pans can be a pain

When you say your floor pan is "rusting", What exactly do you mean? If it just has some scale on it or surface rust, there is no need to replace it. Even a few pin holes would not warrant a new floor pan. Now if it is swiss cheese then I agree you should replace it. If not go to work with a wire wheel, vacuum up the mess and POR-15 it, lay down some heat/sound deadener and put down new carpet.

I am not sure they are even reproducing floor pans, etc... for 1980's Malibus. You may have to go to a wrecking yard and to get your panels. At that point it may be less of a hassle to find a donor car and put your good parts on it. Depending on how much rust your car has.

If the holes aren't too big, you might get away with just laying a couple layers of fiberglass on each side.
