Flowmaster Delta Flow vs. Super 40

I'm looking at these to mufflers for my Chevy 350. Both claim to reduce interior resonance (drone) compared to original 40 series Flowmasters. From the site, the Delta Flows are the quieter of the two. My question is which will make the interior of my Nova liveable on longer trips. I love the deep sound of the Super 40s but do they really reduce drone over the originals? Are the Delta Flows too quiet? Any experiences with these mufflers over the original 40s is welcome. Thanks.

An X pipe is essential.Most of the drone goes away when an x or H is installed.I use full 3inch mandrel bent exhaust and its not that noisy.For a high horse power car its not noisy,until you plant the throttle,then it can drown out those 10,000 dollar japanese stereos with a different kind of stereo.
also ,what cylinder heads do you use? are they ported?

Oh its nothing much. I just have a basic low compression Goodwrench 350 with 1 5/8 full length headers and a 2 1/2 dual exhaust. The car is a cuiser, but I still want it to sound good without out being deafening for my family (but not too quiet, lol)

The reason I asked about heads,stock or mild cast iron heads have more of a crackle sound,Al heads usually have a deeper sound more of a rumble.The drone will mostly go away with the x pipe or H pipe.The H pipe is a lot cheaper and only takes 30 minutes in any muffler shop.Aluminum intakes also increase engine noise,that is different too,more valve train noise and under the hood is noisier,just volume.
sound barrier under the carpet will help,but wait until the h pipe is in.full tail pipes moves the sound further back

I thought that the super 40's where louder than the original 40's but i could be wrong. I've had the delta flows and they have a little bit of tone but they were too quite for me. Personally I dont like flowmaster mufflers either way, they are behind the curve when it comes to acutally flow. Dynomax and Magnaflow are the two leading muffler companies when it comes to performance. I personally like Dynomax cause I'm not willing to pay an extra $60.00 just for it to say Magnaflow (that is littleraly what you are paying for).

As for an X pipe or an H pipe, they have acually done test and found that the H pipe slows the flow down and reduces flow through the exhuast, hindering performance, I dont have anyting wrong with a X pipe but at the same time i'm not a huge fan of them seeing as many people can listen to one side of the exhaust or the other and determine what is gong in inside that banks cylinders by the sound. You can't do that with a X pipe.

Please don't read too much into these internet 'my muffler only flows 1800cfm and his flows 2600cfm...what am I going to do' whine and moan threads.

Lest be honest; most true performance mufflers will be able to flow more air through it than your car can generate. Doesn't mean you need it. And it doesn't mean its hurting you.

If its about noise, a 3-chamber crossflow muffler; or 2 2-chamber mufflers with a cross over of some type are more than adequate.

Guys love to convince each other that they need long tube headers (which aren't tuned to that specific motor), 3" pipes, 2 chamber flowbastids and an X pipe will magically 'make' power.

If you want to reduce drone, run the pipes over the axle, use an X pipe and a chambered welded seam muffler with some sort of accoustic wrap (like fiberglass) similar to a magnaflow.

Run 2.25 pipe if you have manifolds, 2.5" pipe if you have worked heads and headers.

test after test have been done on long tube-equal length headers vs shortie headers and time and time again they have proven that the long tube-equal length headers out perform the shorties. I dont care much for the H & X pipe simply becuase the H pipe acutally hurts power as to where the X pipe isn't benificial enough to justify the extra cost. Then when it comes to mufflers I have a hard time paying for the "name" of a muffler company just because they think I should. Dynomax along with Thrush (which dynomax makes) have been proven to flow better than some of the leading "BIG NAME" mufflers but yet they cost 50-75% of the price. Take the mufflers on my truck, Thrush Welded mufflers; they are proven to flow better than the Flowmaster 40's and have a very similar sound but yet they cost less than $38.00 a piece vs about $75.00 a piece for the FM 40's. then take the mufflers i run on my street/strip camaro; Dynomax racing bullets which cost $47.00 where as the comprable Magnaflow mufflers cost $85.00. But yet the Dynomax muffler flows better.

Sometimes these threads degenerate into "theoretical" rambles(opinion/internet statements of "fact") - when all the OP asked for was information on whether a Flowmaster Delta Flow mufflers droned or was quieter then another version. He didn't ask for X pipes or H pipes, long vs short headers. As far as brands, also not his question - yawn!!

The Delta Flow mufflers sound pretty good with and without an H or X though they do mellow some with one. The 50 series is even a bit quieter but still maintains some level of growl.

Saito; as to which of the 2 mufflers is louder; you could ask the manufacturer for a decibel level; however the distance the meter is from the tailpipe greatly effects the test.

I don't like the 40 series at all, but the 50 series seems to be a nice compromise. Just a thought.

On my car the original 40's are the loudest and are the one's I run at the moment and I can run some good number's.I cant run the exhaust out the back either. So if noise is a concern I'd run one of the other's.

I have good luck placing the mufflers just before the diff and run the exhaust out the back. I just use a single crossover pipe.

I just had a Chevelle in the had a Delta 3" ran out the back and its sounded nice and healthy with very little Drown and sounded very nice.

You can find sound clips on the web (youtube) but as far as inside noise it depends on a couple of different factors as already mentioned. I personally like flowmasters because of the sound out of the pipe. On the other hand I put a set of SPL mufflers on my daily driver and i get tone at part throttle and a nice muscle sound at wot. Back to the question i think you should step up one on the flowmasters.

full exhaust to the rear bumper does more than anything.. if the price is not an option look into the Borla line..
