Which flywheel? 1989 305 chevy engine in 1980 truck

Need flywheel help to a newer 1989 305 chevy engine in an 1980 truck; which the bolt pattern for the 1985 and down are different from 1986 and up flywheel patterns. How would l go about doing this? I believe the clutch that's in it, is either an 11'' or 12'' clutch, not exactly sure. Any help would be great thanks

Ayuh,.... Chevy has used both the 12" flywheel, 'n the 14" flywheel, pretty much forever,...

Both the 153 tooth, 'n the 168 tooth are available in the early big bolt pattern, 'n the smaller newer pattern,...

The catch is, the block has to be drilled, 'n tapped for the starter, for the flywheel size ya need...
Many blocks are drilled for both patterns, some are not...
Straight across for the 153 tooth 12" flywheel, 'n staggered bolts for the 168 tooth, 14" flywheel...

The correct f-wheel for that application will have the smaller 2" bolt pattern and will be "externally balanced" (the 1-piece rear main seal engine itself uses a neutral balanced damper w/a counter balanced flywheel).

So get one to fit the '89 engine having the right bolt pattern for the size of the pressure plate you want to use.

BTW, now would be a good time to replace the clutch and PP along w/the throw out bearing and pilot bearing. Using old/used clutch parts on a new flywheel can be more grief than it's worth if the clutch slips or the TOB gives out- then you'll be doing the job all over again as far as removing and replacing the parts.

Look at the starter- it'll tell you if you have a 153 or 168 tooth flywheel. 153 tooth starter "straight across" bolt pattern left, 168 tooth "staggered" bolt pattern starter right. Click on photo for more:

So all l pretty much do is buy the flywheel for the engine. And make sure it's the same clutch size diameter as a 1980 style. If l'm reading this correctly....Thanks
